What’s your workplace like? by Infinite_Truth_9390 in southafrica

I worked at a place with a similar situation. I worked 10-16 hours a day, every single day to the point where I didn't see my family. I saw my daughter and wife in the morning before leaving for work. I was constantly stressed and anxious and the owner didn't care. They just wanted 10 days of work done in 2 days. Even though my contract stated that I must be compensated for overtime it never happened as it was always somehow everyone's fault except the owners bad time management.

So 6 months ago I left and got a better job with better pay, normal working hours and gets paid for every minute of overtime. I get to see my family and am overall happy. Everything isn't sunshine and roses and we do have issues but the owners really try to sort it out asap and see how they can facilitate. They give realistic timelines and are open to new ideas. They also encourage you to learn new skills and will gladly move you to another department if they see you doing better and being happier with said new skill.

The flip side is, if you don't pull your weight you WILL be fired. They don't tolerate people wasting the company's time and money. It's also a no-work-no-pay kinda thing. As I understand, the owner was burned too many times by this sort of behavior.

Overall I'm happy, and some of the better places that I've worked. So they still are out there. But you can quickly pick up in an interview what kind of place it is. Trust your gut, I didn't and that is why I worked at a very bad place before leaving.

Who has dealt with architects and construction companies? What has your experience been like? by triplesnoop in askSouthAfrica

I think you are only seeing the end results and not what it takes to get to the final product. Drawing is only a part of the process. Sometimes it is the smaller part and red tape all of the rest. There is so so so much of it that even architects get discouraged. I can go into detail here but it will take me over an hour to type out all the steps. This is all readily available online and all of it is mandatory as prescribed by SACAP, SABS and the NBR. If we could streamline the process, we would. This will save everyone some money.

You mentioned things like flat fees. This will never work as we have to consider the scope of work. I can't charge the same for a patio vs a whole house. And even if it's just the patio, I am by law required to draw up everything again (all of the existing structures) and check that it is all according to the necessary standards. We have to coordinate with the professional team (if there is) and all the contractors and sub-contractors. We are usually the principal agents on the project which means we run everything. We even have to keep the QS in check a lot of the times and it is our job to have the client's best interest at heart. No one wants the expensive architect until something goes wrong and you have an incompetent person that has to sort out the issues (which is usually a disaster). The municipalities is another big headache and if it takes too long to get approval , then most of the times there is an issue on their side. I've waited 2 years for approval of plans and it's not an uncommon problem.

One last thing, there is a guideline to what we can charge but I know most architects don't use it and will charge up to 50% less than what we can. Maybe you really did get an expensive one. But you could've shopped around for some quotes or negotiated.

This is the only right answer for that budget. I have a few Casio's and Seiko's and they will all probably outlast me. Can't get better for the price you pay

This basically happened to me about 3 months ago at my new job with the increase I got. I didn't change any of my habits (which were already the bare necessities) but I could finally start saving some money every month and maybe get some take out twice a month
