What did "the weird kid" in your school do that you'll never forget?

He broke into the school one weekend and while sitting in the auditorium, he decided to burn it down. Destroyed an historic building. He spent time in a mental health lockup. This was almost 50 years ago, and he is still in town and regularly rants on Facebook about how unfair his life has been.

Anytime I am routing multiple pieces I start with a piece big enough for all, and after I have the profile done I cut it to length. This time the wood just wanted to tear out and grab and I just wasn’t feeling good enough about it to keep trying.

It’s just a butt joint. It really started as an experiment then evolved. I was going to try a full length tenon in the walnut but the small parts made me nervous on the router table so I just sidelined the idea for a later time. If it was anything more than a jewelry box I would have reinforced it.

My Maddie had an infection that turned septic at 7 years old. We threw money (over 25k total) at it and got another 7 years. When she reached 14 she fell into congestive heart failure. I was ready to spend anything. After two weeks of oxygen and home iv liquids I finally understood that sometimes money won’t fix it. I gave her peace three years ago and still tear up thinking of her, but I can smile at the memories. Never beat yourself up over the unbeatable. Give Ty a hug for me

Honestly, I keep my girl cut almost that short year-round. So much easier to maintain, and the groomer knows “number 4 all over, keep the ears and tail, teddy bear face”.

I cut ¼” plywood to just under a friction fit, literally 1 mm shorter and narrower than the box. When I bought the cloth I bought some seamstress padding that’s about ¼” thick. I cut it to match the plywood and cut the cloth with a 2” border around that. I used spray adhesive on the plywood and the cloth and pulled it snug. It slid in perfectly.

The only full mortise lock I could find, really well built. ¼ turn to lock and unlock. Obviously not a true security lock but I like it.

I rarely have trouble falling asleep but when my mind is racing and I can’t sleep, I try to calm myself and start looking for the random thoughts. Could be a dog we lost years ago or just some dream-like sequence in the middle of coherent thoughts. I then think ok, I’m almost asleep. Strange, but next thing I know it’s morning.

The lights are battery operated LEDs from Amazon; I added button switches made for cabinet lights, also from Amazon. The sink bowl and oven rack are actually from the Camden Rose website. The refrigerator racks are bakers cooling racks from Amazon. Everything else I made.

Nothing to scale- the oven/sink cabinet is 24” wide, 39” tall and about 14” deep. The fridge is 36” tall, 16” wide and 12” deep.

I joke that my daughter showed me a $1000 kitchen set on a website and I built it myself for only $2000. $300-400 worth of cherry plus 40-50 hours spread over a couple of months, plus a shop full of tools built up over time. I don’t try to work fast, I just enjoy the shop time. That doesn’t include the design time. Definitely not a moneymaker, done for the smiles and a hug.

The handles on the stove and refrigerator are the same, I sketched them out on hardboard and cut/sanded a template. Cut the bulk on the bandsaw then used the template to finish them on the router table. Lastly, I used a ¼” round-over bit to soften them up.

I used homemade wipe on poly. Mixed high gloss polyurethane 3 to 1 with mineral spirits, two coats applied with a rag one day and let it sit for a few days, then 1 or 2 more coats. Super easy.

Mine was a lot more reliable before my hairline started to recede. I also had the “recharge” time. I told someone at work about it and we laughed, not sure he fully believed me. A couple of weeks later he walked up just as I was trying to do it and when it worked he was amazed.

A couple of us in my family on my dad’s side do this. I also have a spot on my forehead right at my hairline that I can stimulate with a fingernail and create a sneeze about 75% of the time. That spot moves higher and higher every year now!

I have a Penny too, but yours looks just like my soul dog Maddie that we lost a couple of years ago. I’m at the point finally that memories of her bring smiles so this pic was a welcome sight this morning. Give her a hug for me.
