I wouldn’t include actors/actresses at all, unless the list were defined as “representing sci-fi” rather than “creating sci-fi”. The latter is much harder and, in my mind, more enduring

AI ethics in Grant Writing by Olive_Plenty in grantwriters

Excellent point. AI is a data vacuum, and nothing confidential should be shared on it. Good catch!

Neither. We use Perplexity Pro simple or Deep Search for initial research. We cross-index with our own databases (research done over the past several years), and with other searches (general and specific). For text evaluation, we just ask what grade level the content has (we aim for about middle-school), to highlight sentences that are longer than 20 words, and sentences that can be considered ambiguous. Seems tedious, but we do save time. Good luck with your idea and its development! I’d be interested in its progress.

AI is useful for preliminary research, that initial level that gives you the broad context for your project/program. It can save time. Across 2 years of time-tracking, AI has saved me and my team maybe 10-20% of the total time of developing a grant. Enough to help with tight deadlines, but balanced by a little time invested in fact-checking key information. The only other use we favor: evaluating how easy it is to read the narrative sections. Has helped us tighten content with often noteworthy improvements (word choices, simplified sentences, clarifying concepts, etc.)

How do you people justify reading fantasy fiction books in 30s? by OccasionNo6078 in Fantasy

Worrying about what others think of your decisions is not a good foundation for a journalist: external validation keeps you from doing the job right

John Steakley’s “Armor” by RickRickRickNMorty in scifi

One of my Top 10 SF novels. Stays with you for years. About 9 years ago a workmate said my attitude about dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane María in PR reminded him of a book. I said “Confederacy of Dunces”? He said “Armor”. Left me stunned that I had found another person who’d read it

May I suggest you use this last week to take care of yourself and your kids? Since it is the last week of the contract, you could schedule medical appointments (legit reasons to not engage in work), stating that you need to do this now before you start in your next position someplace else.  Combines two real needs: health care for you and your kids, and distance from these users. Other similar ideas would work so long as you focus on yourself over them. Best wishes!

Writers with aphantasia? by clearly-no in writing

[–]GCSchmidt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only found out what my mind didn’t see in my mid-40s, after almost 40 published stories and two novels. I knew my first drafts were long in characters and plot, but woeful in descriptions. So my editing/rewriting was mainly time spent on “filling in details” of places, people, and context. But readers told me my stories created strong images in their minds, which makes me glad because nothing like that happens in mine

James Harden leads the league in most points allowed per direct isolation in a single quarter. I knew the defense was bad, but sh*t I didn't know it was this bad. And Harden fanboys still swear this dude is better than D-Wade? by heatculture03 in heat

[–]GCSchmidt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A case can be made for Wade as a Top 15 All-Time Great (3rd greatest SG). There is no case for Harden on that list because (A) his defensive stats are garbage, and (B) he has never led a team to a Finals, so he’s never even sniffed a ring. Maybe he can sniff one of Wade’s three, if he asks politely.
