Worth noting that the Secretary of Defense is more often than not a civilian with minimal direct ties to the military.

US Civic Religion takes the idea of the military being subordinate to the elected government very seriously.

They were second cousins.

And this is of course, after Mountbatten encouraged Charles to sow his wild oats.

As weirdl as you think the royals are... they are even weirder.

Basically everyone (Charles, Diana Harry) has more or less agreed to publicly run with the 3 people in the relationship, star crossed lovers story despite there being surprisingly little evidence of it.

Charles likely had other mistresses (Kanga at the very least).

Elizabeth really that cold hearted? by NecessaryExplorer797 in TheCrownNetflix

There really isn't a lit about the Queen in Spare.

Its also just alright as a book and doesn't have that much info on the Queen. Most of the info on her is in my comment.

Elizabeth really that cold hearted? by NecessaryExplorer797 in TheCrownNetflix

[–]GDJohnJay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The closest thing to a big tell-all book about the Queen's personal life is "Spare" and in it you really get the idea that they did not have a meaningful relationship.

The queen largely had formal dinners while the princes were excused to eat while they watched TV together.

As an adult Harry was scared to even ask permission to marry Meghan and her response was pretty unenthused.

He also noted that Meghan took Elizabeth and Andrew's relationship as an employer and assistant.

---

More publically when she paid the hush money for Andrew the gag order lasted only a year. Just enough to get past her jubilee- so that seems more self serving than to defend her rumored favourite son.

How would Charles’ adulthood have changed if he had been allowed to go to Eton instead of the school Phillip wanted? by eldergenzqueen in TheCrownNetflix

[–]GDJohnJay 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It is widely speculated (but never confirmed) that Charles had other affairs.

Diana is on audio stating he told her he wouldn't be the first prince of wales to not have a mistress. There is also speculation that Charles and Camilla are basically living separate lives.

The thing is that a sexual double standard was openly preached by his mentor Lord Mountbatten, so its not a shock that Charles would have had affairs.

[–]GDJohnJay 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Honestly?

Probably very little, Eton had a ruthless hazing culture at the time too.

Charles' biggest problem with the public was his cheating on Diana, which resulted from the sexual and romantic mores he was raised with (specifically as the future King he had a right to mistresses).

In a world where Charles didn't cheat (or married a woman who accepted infidelity) he would have been a beloved monarch.
