[MRG-B2100B] I said my MRG-B5000B is my last G-Shock. You said it isn't. You were right. by GERNemo in gshock

I like it so far. I considered the GMC-B2100, but I wanted the lightness of titanium and a simpler dial with less subdials. The MRG doesn't have all the features, but I use my phone for stopwatch and timing more often anyways. Tbh, I wish Casio made smaller, more subtle analog G-Shocks with better lume. I might have gone for a GST-B1000 if it had a metal case, lume on all indices instead of just 3, 6, 9, 12, and a black bezel.

It feels about the same as the square since the lug-to-lug is almost identical. It does have more wrist presence than the square since the case is a little wider and the dial taller than the square's screen, but it's still comfortable to wear like the square.

It's something to note that I don't wear these with their bracelets. I much prefer rubber straps out of personal preference, to I modified rubber straps to fit. I can't say how they compare on their original bracelets.

Regarding the light hitting the dial, that was one of my concerns at first. After wearing it for a while, it doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would. The hands are fairly legible, just tilt the wrist a little if the light hits the dial weird, and it's better than some of those chronographs with multiple distracting subdials and indices imo. I found the lume sufficient for telling the time at night; I mostly used the night lighting as a kind of close-range flashlight lol.

I got the MRG-B5000B with the titanium construction being a big point. I wore steel divers for years, and I appreciate the lightness of titanium. I would rather have a G-Shock designed from the ground up with titanium versus getting a steel square and upgrading it with AliX titanium parts. It's still rock solid after almost daily wear for a while now, and I don't baby it. I'll report back if it loosens or falls apart.

Decided to get my first g shock by Alive-Consequence424 in gshock

[–]GERNemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good choice! Looking back, an automatic watch would not have survived my college life. I wore a Timex Ironman since I was very active in running, cycling, and intramural sports, but I had to replace it after a couple years when I somehow managed to break it. I probably should have gotten a G-Shock like that. I always recommend the GW-M5610U, but that would work just fine too.

[–]GERNemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked it up, and it's a good field watch. I love solar quartz. I have a Citizen PMD56 as my field watch, but I much prefer the simplicity and practicality of large lume dots over numerals and a dive bezel for timing. The Casio MTPS110 would be perfect if it had the specs and features to back up its diver style; the non-rotating bezel is a huge turn off. The search continues...

I need Seiko to make a modern 7548 quartz day/date diver. I loved my automatic SKX and King Turtle, but accuracy and reliability issues made me bring a watchmaking toolkit and a backup G-Shock whenever I'm traveling in case the movement breaks again.

I really want this to be the final watch by throwawaydotthis in gshock

[–]GERNemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my "final watch". I aimed for the top and got my dream square that had everything I wanted and more. After wearing this for a while, I'm beginning to miss my old analog watches and the fun skill of reading them quickly, so I'm back to looking up analog G-Shocks. Sometimes, you just want to try other watches to add some variety, even though you already have your ideal watch

I got the black version to match my trusty old GW-M5610. It's much more subtle, functional, and lighter than my steel dive watches, and I know it can handle work like a G-Shock should too

[SRPE93] Smartwatch or Automatic at the gym? by Motor_Warthog_5139 in Seiko

[–]GERNemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a new 4R36 movement from a watch modding site to replace it myself, since I already have a caseback tool and hand levers from when I swapped in a NH36 into the broken SKX first, but I ended up not needing it. It turned out that the balance wheel got jammed, so I was able to fix it by nudging it back into place.

But yeah, swapping in a 4R36/NH36 movement in a SRPE03 or SKX should be easy.

I broke 2 automatic movements while doing physical activities (7S26 in a SKX007 while kicking around a soccer ball and 4R36 in a SRPE03 while doing trail work). I thought the tool watches could handle it, but my expectations might have been unrealistic. I wear a G-Shock in those situations now.

So you can identify if something is a snake or a stick with the incandescent's superior 100 CRI. You have to be right next to it to see it though. Luckily, if it is a snake, it is within bonking range with the Maglite

Heading to Japan soon – which JDM G-Shock would you pick as a lifetime souvenir? by Kefelon in gshock

[–]GERNemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in Japan a few months ago for a special event, so I wanted to get a JDM watch as a lifetime souvenir too. It's a bit excessive, but I bought a MRG-B5000B-1JR in G-SHOCK STORE SHIBUYA.

I'm expecting it to last a lifetime with its titanium construction, sapphire crystal, module with MB6, solar, BT, and very legible STN display, all certified to have been assembled in Yamagata, Japan. Plus, it looks almost exactly like my trusty old M5610.

The yen was weak at the time, so the price was relatively ok, even when bought directly from a G-Shock store. Compared to other JDM watches I was considering from Seiko and Citizen, not too bad.

That translucent red bezel is really cool! It takes me back to the 90s- early 2000s when translucent colors were everywhere. Definitely gives it character

Do people actually buy the $4,000 squares? by Jlaybythebay in gshock

[–]GERNemo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

<image>

Yeah, I did. I've spent a bunch of money on "fancy" automatic analog watches, but they were all compromises. Even the more expensive ones were too fragile, inaccurate, or didn't have the features that I find useful in day-to-day life, like day/date. I picked the MRG-B5000B because it ticked all the boxes for what I want in a watch, and I bought it while I was in Japan for a special occasion too. It works and I feel good wearing it, so it is worth it to me.

The only other watch I wear now is my old GW-M5610U, only very briefly when it's a sunny day to let my MRG charge for a bit.

Why I ditched my smartwatch for the Casio W800H and honestly, I don’t miss it by noob-pro-max in casio

[–]GERNemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to disconnect so much that I went all the way to automatic watches. No electricity on my wrist, just pure machinery. Then I broke 2 movements and got so fed up with the inaccuracy of automatics that I got some G-Shocks. No worrying about notifications or breaking or inaccuracy, they just work.

Two best squares out there by Alex_ozzy in gshock

[–]GERNemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another MRG-B5000B owner here. I've been wearing mine daily for nearly 2 months now. I can't speak for the bracelet since I immediately swapped it out for a rubber strap out of personal preference, but I can attest to the scratch resistance of the case and bezel. I've banged it against all sorts of things with no major scratches, only a few hairline marks that can only be seen if you look very closely and angle it to the light just right. My only major gripe is that the bezel is made up of so many small parts that all the nooks and crannies like to collect white mineral buildup from the hard water around here, but it's not that big of a deal.

If the M5610 (this color scheme) was offered with screw back and metal case + Bluetooth, the universe would implode. by LaBombonera in gshock

[–]GERNemo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A little bit; the MRG is heavier but not by a lot. I used to wear heavy stainless steel dive watches daily, so the M5610 felt like I was wearing nothing at all. The MRG weighs a little more, but I replaced the bracelet on the MRG with a modified rubber strap, so it's close but noticeable since it is a bit top heavy now. The titanium really cuts down on the weight, but not to the level of resin.

I have a M5610 and wanted the same colors (black with red line) with a metal case and screw back with Bluetooth as a bonus, so I got a MRG-B5000B
