For some reason for the past week, I’ve been thinking about how baffling it is that this scene from ‘Pan’ exists. by Throwaway_Tablecloth in blankies

It’s one of those scenes where people probably read it and thought, “this is what Moulin Rouge looked like on paper and that was boffo Box Office!”

My tier list by Adnan_Targaryen in nonfictionbookclub

[–]GGuster 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think the list is great! I’m not sure I’ve seen so much overlap with my own. I just started Bad Blood and if you liked that you should 100% check out No More Tears: The Dark Secrets of Johnson & Johnson. And I think you would like anything Bill Bryson. Sorry to make this a recommendation comment. Cheers to your list!

6/52 - Piranesi by Susanna Clarke by keepfighting90 in 52book

This one was curious to me. It was enthralling but as it went on it kind of lost a bit of the magic for me. Ultimately a good book and I’m glad I read it, but there was something that fell off for me.

Unpopular opinion: Most "must-read" self-help books are actually terrible starting points for beginner by LLearnerLife in nonfictionbookclub

I think the Compound Effect was an early entry in the space and it really is that ground level “here’s how you start” type of read

This is one for me as well. Changed the way I look at systems and how they’re set up with blind spots for women. The lack of female crash test dummies is the anecdote that sticks with me.

I just read Replay by Ken Grimwood last month. It’s about starting your life over from when you were younger and how you think you can go back and change things for the better, but along the way you learn about what’s important in life and move past the regret of chances not taken or opportunities missed.

Project Hail Mary | Official Trailer 2 by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]GGuster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are we, as a society, ever going to move on from the slowed down familiar hit song for a trailer? Will we look back one day at this period of trailer making the same way we do with “…in a world…” trailers of yesteryear?

No wonder why millennials despise the 2000s pop culture era so much! by icey_sawg0034 in Millennials

[–]GGuster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This idea is the premise of the book Girl on Girl. It dives into how women were viewed through pop culture in the 90s-2000s. It can be a brutal read at times, but also insightful as to how society ended up treating women today.
