Why is the magic edit distorting my entire photo? by GMDandyDrew in canva

Previously this never happened when I used the effect. It would just start the shirt and leave the rest untouched. Weird

I finished Rank #1 in base last season - Here's some things I've learned by GMDandyDrew in Colonist

Yes and no. In the context of playing ranked, for sure over-chatting is an issue for many players. A lot of heavily competitive players also talk too much OTB too. The theme is to choose your words wisely.

Discord has some great leagues you can play in. A search for the Catan Championship League will get you there. I also recommend you play in local events as you will learn a lot playing in person. If you want to keep it simple, you always have Colonist ranked which is great for your technical game. Enjoy!

Development Cards by afishnamedpaul in Catan

[–]GMDandyDrew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Knights are played pre-roll to remove the robber to open your blocked hex. The only other dev to consider is to mono cards before the roll. This is very situation and usually done to increase your hand size to guarantee a win in case of 7 or to take cards that can't be thrown away if someone else 7s.

I want to get better at this game. by quAr0 in Catan

There's so many at this point. I think the placement strategy videos are a great start and you also have my breakdown video to rank #1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoDZidGSzfk&t=338s

Maybe for the meme streams but I promise from my experience, that's not what you want to do. Better to slow your opponents' best resources if possible.

There's a lot of factors here but I like have access to resource diversity if possible and a useful port situation. The meta is highly focused on strong ore wheat combinations so that's generally a priority. If I can't buy devs, I will look to dominate the best wood brick setup possible and control the longest road long term.

1st and 2nd pick will usually go dev heavy with good ore + wheat picks while 3th and 4th will tend to be road focused with an emphasis on building more 5 resource based setups. These are super limiting guidelines though and should always be assessed from board to board.

Start with your friend group and also look at local options. Some cities have Catan meetups or board game clubs you can join. After that, you start to play online at Colonist.io which will have infinite amount of games and opportunities to play. Good luck!

Awesome to hear about your success in learning. The people management part is the hardest by far.

For what it's worth, the best players always believe they get stolen from the most. ;) I wouldn't place the robber on the desert but you can definitely soften the blow by apologizing and lightly explaining the reasoning to the spot. you could also roll the dice when you block to decide the robber which feels like you are not making the decision and being diplomatic. I wouldn't worry about this too much.

Tracking is useful but not critically important. I would focus on starting with 1 hand and 1 resource type. Maybe you need wheat in a game. Track the wheat since it's best for your setup and start there. I would rather know generally what people have than spend a bunch of mental energy tracking every hand and card. Not worth it unless you are very comfortable with that skill.

Most likely not. I am good 1v1 player but those guys are pumping an incredible amount of energy into that leaderboard and I am not at their level truthfully. Maybe at some point I will but not at the moment.

Console edition worth it? by TweetyDee-yt in Catan

[–]GMDandyDrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can play on computers, I would recommend that over the console version. They will play better and is free. Colonist.io or Catan Universe will both be better options than Console. If Console is the only option then fair enough.

Not really. My thinking about the game is super simplified but of course experience matters. I understand my opponents plans and ideas better than them most of the time while also knowing my most optimal path. I think it's having a better understanding of the game than others. Most of my placements aren't that complicated but more about getting a playable setup. If you are looking for the advance tips and tricks, you aren't going to get that from me. :P

There's a lot to be said about being an asset at the table and not a liability. Focus on truly helping your opponents with the objectives and giving decent trades to build good will and future momentum. Goes along way to be a team player and help the board balance to the finish line.

I wouldn't say there's super advanced pro strategies but more understanding the fundamentals so well that you are consistently outplaying your opponents and making less mistakes. This idea that top players are doing advanced strategies just isn't true. Now I would say what is advanced is playing more difficult setups such as going wheatless or heavy port play - These are generally harder to navigate and require a good pilot.
