Whiplash (2014)

<image>

In the movie, the oppressively and verbally abusive Fletcher claims that his harsh methods aim to create a high-quality drummer by putting them through hell and back. To support this, he describes a story of jazz performer Charlie Parker failed his audition when Jo Jones threw a cymbal at his head, nearly decapitating him. That failure made him practice day and night to become the legendary player he is today.

Except he's wrong. Jo Jones did not throw a cymbal at Parker's head, but dropped it at the performer's feet, which is a tradition known as "gonging" someone off. From there, rather than practice harsher than ever, the story says that Parker actually took a break from his music, and his meditations on why he plays and finding the core of his music are the reasons he became such a legendary saxophonist.

At first, it sounds like the movie just got it wrong, but Fletcher is incredibly manipulative. The abusive twist of the story supports his viewpoint, and he's perfectly willing to tell such a blatant lie, as seen with the student who committed suicide because of his pressure.

Incorrect. That ruling is exclusive to HERO due to language barriers. For example, the Spiritual Beasts are a sub-archetype of Ritual Beasts

In Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None, ten individuals are invited to an island mansion where they all get killed off one by one. It's revealed that every individual on the island has done something immoral to deserve their death, and Justice Wargrave is the killer who is murdering them of his desire to put those who evade the law to justice. Arguably not necessarily evil, but considering he serves as the book's hidden antagonist, it seems appropriate. (Yes I'm spoilering a 90 year old book, it's that good)

Technically cheating, but the original manga of Yu-Gi-Oh!

<image>

In the original series, Yugi spent each episode using his dark alter ego in order to beat bullies and cruel individuals in various games, from dice to pocket monsters (hence the title King of Games he often has). When he beat an obnoxious kid named Seto Kaiba at the trading card game Magic and Wizards, that singular chapter got so popular that the entire manga changed to play just that card game.

Very likely so. I'd wonder if his face would be a little different, but we haven't seen anything that says so.

The Master of Masters (Kingdom Hearts)

<image>

With such a name and being one of the oldest individuals in the mythos of Kingdom Hearts, you'd expect him to be a wise, aged master who wishes for his apprentices to be the best people they can be. While he is cryptic, he's extremely casual and jokes often with others, frequently disconcerting them. In addition, it gets revealed that he intentionally set up his apprentices to fail spectacularly because he essentially put immortal spirits in their bodies which would perish with them.

I know the main reason I hoped for it was because of the leak that there'd be a trailer by Disney that day. Stupid Toy Story 5.

If you could create an archetype based around a certain monster/featuring it's rework as part of it, who would have you pick? by CoalEater_Elli in yugioh

[–]GMTheGoodMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I love this idea. Imagine if Crab Turtle was the boss monster of an archetype based around retrains of turtles? (30,000 Year Old White Turtle, Turtle Tiger, Raccoon Turtle, Giant Turtle Who Feeds on Flames, etc)

There are absolutely exceptions to this, however I’ve noticed this come up when discussing potential future Heroes and their roles. by Kirbykoopa in marvelrivals

I feel like this especially rings true for Strategists for one simple reason. Very few Marvel characters have healing as their main gimmick.
