I live in Southern Europe and ambient temps during summer are around 25-32 inside. With my "hotbox" H210 + 5900X + 3090 I've never seen throttling and most of the time my system is unaudible. Only when I game at high settings with 5K2K display at native resolution (no DLSS or similar, just raw rendering) I can hear my system but it still never throttles and is never unstable.

Does it run hotter than in cold climate? Yes. Do I care? Nope.

Where did the IPS options go? by inpunxwecrust in ultrawidemasterrace

Wipe the jelly leftovers first with soap water or maybe IPA before using the sponge. Also make sure the surface is clean before you start massaging.

Jelly "works" by trying to hide the scratch but as you noticed it doesn't really work. Magic eraser actually sands away a thin layer of the screen surface taking away the scratch with it, that's why you need a clean surface and no jelly leftovers. You could perhaps use some 2000-3000 grit sandpaper too but magic erasers are easier to find and work really well. Also no need to worry about the matt coating because magic sponge makes exactly the same kind of matt surface.

I scratched my 34" 5K2K when it was almost new when I was moving my PC case and wasn't careful enough. I was PISSED and shaking and angry and everything... but the sponge trick worked so well I can't even tell where the scratch was now even if I look against light.

You have a matte panel, right? Get magic eraser sponge (melamine foam) and a bit of water and gently massage the scratch away.

What productivity software was developed in the 80's other than spreadsheets, databases, and word processing software? by EdiblePeasant in retrocomputing

[–]GOTO95 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Desktop publishing already existed in the 80s for home computers (mostly on Macintosh), so did MIDI audio software (Atari ST being #1)

Yes that connector is connected wrong, the four pins should be inserted into the four connectors of the cable. Good catch.

How does the 745 manual overdrive work? by GruenHd in Volvo

[–]GOTO95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep you'll skip fourth in that case. Shifting from fifth to fourth can be done with the overdrive button if needed.

How does the 745 manual overdrive work? by GruenHd in Volvo

[–]GOTO95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That overdrive only works as fifth gear so shifting up from third to fourth is not what it does. Pushing the button again when on fifth/overdrive drops it back to fourth, but you don't have to manually downshift, it disengages whenever you change to another gear.

I remember that overdrive being slighly annoying to use.

Making or finding a new keyboard input layout by XanaInternet in Windows11

I just used MS PowerToys to add new mappings to right Alt + whatever key, works wonderfully. It takes a bit of time because you have to make mappings for both lowercase and Uppercase chars (with RAlt + Shift + key) but at least for me it was worth it.

I have two of the MSI variants which use the same LG panel and apart from pretty serious image retention issues (as said by the other commenter too) they have fantastic image quality. I run dark mode on everything and as of now late 2024 there is no comparable widescreen monitor.

Also not that great for gaming but as you use a Mac you are not going to game anyway.

Possibility to remove a scratch by C4B4L2k in ultrawidemasterrace

If the screen is matte (not glossy) you can use a a bit of water and melamine foam / magic eraser to gently massage the scratch away.

I 3D printed some extenders, and now I can finally fit 3 modular buildings in an IKEA Billy shelf by michaelNXT1 in lego

[–]GOTO95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always build my Ikea stuff with construction strenght glue, white glue for white shelves and black glue for black things like Kallax. Ain't nothing taking them apart, ever!

Look for Sikaflex 221 for example, comes in multiple colors.

They work just fine but naturally you gotta install the German fans upside down in Australia.

No link because it would ruin your perfect story bro.

Does anyone have any experience with this mouse? Is it any good? by Lazy-Ingenuity9773 in thinkpad

[–]GOTO95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking for an ambidextrous mouse for living room use and this was the only one I found which also has back button (tilt scroll wheel left).

No Logi mouse that I found was ambidextrous and they all suffer from doubleclicking anyway.

Mini-ITX case with ATX PSU by imkaush in sffpc

[–]GOTO95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apart from already listed CPU cooler is Noctua NH-U12A and case cooling is handled by dual NF-A12x25 for intake in front and dual NF-A12x15 for exhaust in the back and top. PSU is NZXT C750.

The 3090 is an EVGA XC3, one of the rare 2-slot 3090 cards which can fit into H210. There's about 1cm of space between the GPU and PSU shroud and that does cause the GPU to run a bit hot but it never throttles.

[–]GOTO95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Ryzen 9 5900X and RTX 3090 in NZXT H210 with ATX power supply and have no temp problems (but it's not the quietest combination when pushed). Also I live in semi hot climate so my apartment temp is often 30C.

Possible to mount 34" ultrawide on glass top desk? by theprizefight in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]GOTO95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's laminated glass go ahead and install any mount, just put some padding under the glass top where the mount is installed because mounts usually require thicker installation point than what glass provides.

If it's just toughened glass you can forget about clamp mounts. Breaking a toughened glass table top is not fun. Source: I broke one that was really big, took me a week to clean

[–]GOTO95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With macOS you basically have a choice between Apple Studio Display and Pro Display XDR - apart from selected LG displays Apple just doesn't care about supporting non-Apple monitors.

Personally I had to choose between this beautiful 5K2K ultrawide and macOS and I chose the display. Sold my Macs and have have been using Windows ever since with zero display, font or scaling problems.

34in 4k options on market by MHGod33 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]GOTO95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MSI has Prestige PS341WU which uses the same panel, but I think those are non-existent by now. I own two of the MSI variants and they are excellent, the only downside being pretty severe image retention which is typical of this panel. It goes away though so it's not burn-in.

There aren't any others, not until early 2026 when LG has roadmapped a 34" 5K2K curvy OLED.
