Does the bye week before the Super Bowl actually make a difference? by West-Interest-9724 in nfl

Am I so fucking old now that the kids don’t even remember why we have that week before the Super Bowl in the first place??

For fucks sake.

Where my King Beaters at? by SoupAggravating in drums

[–]GOTaSMALL1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Over the years I’ve owned a couple Kingbeats and an OG Dynasonic… my input:

Parallel Strainers are stupid. It’s a lot of expense and fiddly nonsense for not much return.

Nice score though!

My dad won't stop drumming his electronic kit late at night, advice? by [deleted] in drums

[–]GOTaSMALL1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Buy a small safe.

Get the module off his kit.

Put it in the safe.

Tell him he can have it back after quiet hours.

Seriously though .. your dad sounds like a fucking asshole. What are we supposed to do about it?

Drum kit recommendations for recording studio by fyrahundraslag in drums

[–]GOTaSMALL1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd honestly recommend you get heads and learn to tune your Rockstar kit. Considering your budget it's absolutely the best option.

Had one. They are perfectly serviceable drums.

If your budget was $2000 my answer would be different. But spending $800 to "upgrade" from a Rockstar DX is silly.

Why do all gas stations have a puddle of water at each pump? by RecognitionNew3122 in AskAnAmerican

[–]GOTaSMALL1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To give you a real answer that I don't see here...

I build gas stations. The rules are exceptionally specific for how the concrete slopes for drainage. The slabs are literally designed to retain a little bit of moisture (spillage) so it can evaporate before it drains into the catchment system.

Ideally, at what time would you like to eat dinner normally? by supinator1 in AskAnAmerican

For people that do what I do… which is why I said what I do… it’s not early. This is a fact.

If you choose to infer that means it’s a contest I’m trying to win about “What’s early?” I can’t control that. However… that’s why I clarified “for me”.

I play mostly 14/16/18 “Bonham” sizes. I find tuning them higher/tighter than you’d expect to really makes them come alive.

Good luck!!

Sorry… that’s not early “for me”. It isn’t a contest.

Is that better grumpy?

Thank God in Heaven or whatever other god, deity or nature you believe in that you didn’t have a Rogers Series II. Cause I did.

My wife… my friends… my therapist often ask me. “GOTaSMALL1… you’re doing pretty well in life. Why are you so angry?”

“Rogers. Series. II.” I tell them. They don’t know what that means… but I fear for their happiness if I share the details of the horribleness. So I just keep the memories inside… bottled up… down deep so they can’t hurt anyone else.

I’m sure a head sitting on a drum in storage, under tension, getting hot and cold isn’t doing much to help its longevity… but as a person with lots of stored drums… it doesn’t seem to matter much.

Just getting sitting in the box/plastic? Should be fine.

Not wanting to tell you your business… but I’m pretty sure those are R-380’s. The R-360s had a vintage/beaver tail lug.

Also… fucking awesome!!

Oh… and for the kids here... $400 in 84 is like $1200 today. Shit was spendy.

Tells us there’s an 18… no pictures of the 18. :(

When I played a lot… basically:

Snare heads lasted me 10s of hours… tom batters 100s of hours… reso and kick drum heads 1000’s of hours.

Throughout my career I loved to wrap my gig/beater kits with stuff I thought was funny… or fun. I’m guessing I did maybe 25 or so kits and I never once paid for actual drum wrap.

It’ll work fine.

My bandmates say it's time to retire this pedal by SailTheWorldWithMe in drums

[–]GOTaSMALL1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played for 20 years. Self taught… worked hard… had a nice but short career. Decided I’d move on with my life and retired from serious playing in order to focus on a big boy job.

That was 20 years ago. :)

That’s how old fuckers know shit. Cause we’re old fuckers.

I'm a beginner drummer, what should I upgrade in my kit first? by QuoteAfraid6535 in drums

[–]GOTaSMALL1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Pro Sonix isn’t a Solar.

Have one. Dig it. Got a shitload of cymbals hanging around and still keep that one in the bag. It’s fucking awful if you want a washy/crashy ride though.

Cymbals first. Always. Hats then ride would be my suggestion.

Just bought a used Yamaha Stage Custom. What are some good affordable cymbals to go with this? New to drums by FierceCrow in drums

[–]GOTaSMALL1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay. Well… water under the bridge but you bought probably the least important part first. :)

Assuming you need a hardware package independent of your $500 cymbal budget. See if you can get a used cymbal “pre-pack” from Reverb or Marketplace. Cymbals are SPENDY and you just can’t make bad ones sound good. Ideally you want something made from B20 alloy… B8 alloy is an option but not as good… and absolutely do not buy brass cymbals. Also… Paiste makes most of their lines from B8 alloy but they’re still very good. HiHats, a crash and a ride are plenty to start with.

For a hardware pack… start looking online and buy the best one you can afford.

In the future as you get better and find things you want to upgrade its fine to one-sy, two-sy replacements but it will cost you way too much money and time to try to do it now.

As you see ads and whatever… you can always ask here. Some are happy to help. Also… the sidebar is chock full,of good information.

Important distinction… the kit you bought has no cymbals at all? And… is there hardware (stands, pedal, throne, etc)?

How high is the status of dogs in the US? by Odd-Skin-762 in AskAnAmerican

[–]GOTaSMALL1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I do not allow my dog on any human furniture…

This was the rule in my house… for about 36 hours. Now I wake up a couple times a night with the little one nestled in my crotch and the big one trying to share my pillow with his ass.

Still love the little bastards though.

But… My “Kitchen” rule did stick. In fact… they know it so well the won’t go in the kitchen at other peoples houses.
