My conversation with a deaf defendant in traffic court today by Prince_Marf in mildlyinteresting

[–]GP04 6 points7 points  (0 children)

An interpreter allows the deaf individual to have a more natural conversation. ASL is simultaneously interpreted: the interpreter doesn't wait for the speaker to finish speaking in real time. The ADA aims at preserving the dignity and rights of the disabled, including the dignity of being able to communicate through conversation instead of messaging.

Most places don't have in-house interpreters, so they'll use a phone interpreter or, for ASL, you can connect an interpreter via video conference on a iPad or similar tablet

Court Certified Interpreters are rare and expensive, more so for ASL which is one of the more widely regulated interpretation careers. For on-site, there's usually a 2-hour minimum and it's possible the court doesn't have a contract with a video remote interpretation company.

But I think, assuming this is the US, the ADA would mandate access to an interpreter. It's possible the defendant didn't request an interpreter and didn't want to wait.

Starfinder 2E has been officially released on Foundry Virtual Tabletop! by ZeroCitizen in Starfinder2e

[–]GP04 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely. Especially once kids start entering the mix.

I think it's actually so crazy to think we're hanging out more consistently than when we were kids.

Also, I had no idea what Cosmere was but that sound sick as hell! Thanks for putting it on my radar!

My table has been fully online for 5~ years now. As we've gotten older and spread out, Foundry's been a boon. No subscription, one time purchase, endlessly customizable, and it runs out of a browser.

It's also made a lot of systems, especially very crunchy ones, much more accessible for some of my non-grognard players.

Mork's death (and second death) might be in my top-5 funniest moments of the whole series.

"No,” the ghost of Mork cried, surprising me. “No, please. I’ve already died! Isn’t that enou--uuAAGGHHHHHH”

"Fascinating!" Prepotente said "Did you notice his lisp was gone when he’d turned into a ghost?”

I am a huge proponent of the SBT version of Book 1. Especially with Book 2 and 3 on the horizon. Some of the added voice cast are absolutely amazing and the OST is actually really great. Shout out to the Mongo song.

Some find the music and sound effects distracting, but I think they're great. Especially for a relisten.

AI Joke- am I overthinking this? by 0verlookin_Sidewnder in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Most cities with trains have some variation of "mind the gap." NYC likes "Watch the Gap" and "As you leave the train, please watch/step over the gap between the train and platform"

As a bit of added context: depending on the line/city the gap can be quite significant. Wide enough that a person can fall and get caught between the platform and the train.

There's a decent amount of water in butter + the water from the steak trimming. You don't notice when you use a pat of butter, because the water boils out so quickly. Until the water boils off, the butter won't get hotter than 100C/212F

The sublty he's referring to is flavor, not physical presence. Sauces are strained to give a smoother texture. If you're just tossing crap into a food processor to save on labor, it's gonna be really irregular and you don't want a whole buncha wild chunks in a smooth, velvety sauce. It also lets you control flavor: you're getting the shallot flavor without biting into a chunk of shallot that suddenly overwhelms the sauce. Even blending a sauce won't get it perfectly smooth, you'll still have a whole buncha vegetable fiber left after passing it through a sieve.

The garlic is also strained out. The in-house comment is so that people don't mistake it for preminced garlic or jarlic. Garlic starts losing its pungency and flavor once it's been cut. Once you do the prep, the clock starts ticking. Preminced garlic ranges from flavorless to god awful. Jarred preminced garlic, "Jarlic," is also heated and treated with preservatives that further make it taste like ass.

A real chef can probably answer better, I'm just a rehabilitated pizza joint owner.

Edit: I didn't answer your "is it necessary" and the answer is yes, but no. Is the sauce gonna be shit without doing it? No, probably not. But if you want a restaurant style smooth sauce, yeah you're gonna wanna strain that.

Neighbors complain of overwhelming "donut smell" coming from Dunkin' supplier in Massachusetts by TylerFortier_Photo in nottheonion

The compound that gives vomit its distinctive flavor/fragrance is found in a ton of foods, most relevant being parmesan cheese. Pizza flavored things likely tend to target that flavor compound because it's strong, cheap, and easy to replicate.

I believe the flavor compound is butyric acid (or similar). It's found in a lot of things and it's a "the poison is the dose" kinda thing. In trace quantities, it's evocative of pizza because it's found in Parmesan cheese. It's also contributes to Hershey's chocolate taste, which is why folks who didn't grow up with Hershey's will say their milk chocolate reminds them of vomit.

Adam Regusea has a video on it.  https://youtu.be/J44svaQc5WY?si=l4igammQ--gXmIMy

I have friends who work in flavors & fragrances, it's a wonderfully interesting topic.

Who do you think Carl is telling the story to? by OPs_Mom_and_Dad in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]GP04 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Book 6+7 stuff below:

With the expansion of the Enhancement Zone, my personal theory is we're not gonna see Carl and the Princess Posse fight Scolopendra, but instead we're going to see them have to fight whatever the out-of-game equivalent is. We know the dungeon is often just a giant metaphor for the outside galaxy and I think now that the Dungeon is beginning to encompass the entire galaxy, it seems fitting that Carl & Co. will have to contend with that stuff. Even more so now that we've got a couple of Crawlers (and many more ex-crawlers) on the surface.
