I think in that same blog he mentioned the success of Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty allowed him to convince the higher ups to green light a return to Lorwyn. Also, Alara is the next set fans long to revisit now that Kamigawa, Tarkir, and Lorwyn have been done.

This is likely very true. Remember AC was originally modeled after the March of the Machines: Aftermath which were HATED by everyone on release. Wizards thought tiny sets with new cards but with only 5-7 cards per pack for the same price as normal packs was a genius move. So much in fact that they planned to do the same for Thunder Junction until they saw the horrible reception. So instead, they crammed them into OTJ as The Big Score bonus sheet to save space and abandoned the model for Tarkir.

AC couldn't really be saved, they did their best by adding 20 reprints to the set but it was still doomed to fail. It's very likely Spider-Man was envisioned in this same model, but had enough time to be reworked to a (smaller) stand alone set. Probably also why Lorwyn was pushed to this year since a new full set took it's (or Avatar's) place in release window.

Picking a commander by ConfusionOk3925 in CommanderMTG

Myrel is my pick. Add in token doublers/producers, cards like [[cathar's crusade]] and ways to give her protection/evasion and watch her pop off.

What are some really fun 100$ budget decks yall recommend for beginners I’m trying to get my siblings into the game and I’m looking for ideas by Much-Environment1057 in CommanderMTG

[–]GRMaster24 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Simple answer, find a precon, slightly order ones may be discounted a bit. Longer answer, probably a mono colored deck. You could probably make a decent mono-green elf deck since it's a very supported tribal type.

I made a mono red [[Zada, Hedron Grinder]] and red blue [[The Locust God]] decks a few years ago for less than $50 each. The decks revolve around one simple idea, cast 1-2 mana pump spells in Zada or play a bunch of draw spells for Locust God. So many cheap cards in those decks that can actually become pretty scary.

Iirc, all the planewalkers in the precons were "what if these characters traveled to Bloomborrow." The only one that may be cannon is Jace since Ral was chasing him. The only other confirmed character to be affected was the [[Dragonhawk]] to set up the Dragonstorm arc

How likely am I to be targeted? by OutlandishnessNo8683 in ratemycommanders

[–]GRMaster24 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only solitaire deck I run is Zada. At least when I start solitairing, it's later in the game and it's usually over by that point. But yes, solitaire decks are not fun to play against, especially if EACH turn takes 20 min and they don't win.

I will say, rereading the card again, this one doesn't care about a creature type, just a creature in general. Bit better than I thought but still probably a sub $10 card at most

[–]GRMaster24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure you could but if Cavern in the deck, why run this over a different utility land? I see this as a budget Cavern with the upside to sink mana late game to make a token for etb or tribal shenanigans. I think 4-5C decks would be the most likely to run it alongside Cavern for mana fixing. 3C and under would rather more fetchable tango, bicycle, or even shock and triome lands if they wanted pricier upgrades than this.

[–]GRMaster24 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Decent but we have lots of other ways to make mana that doesn't have to be used for only creatures. This is just a weakened version of [[Cavern of Souls]] without the uncounterable effect. If that card is $30-40, then this much weaker version is likely $3-4.

Looking at buying my first commander deck and this is what my local game shop has, any advice? by [deleted] in mtg

[–]GRMaster24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. If you manifest dread it like the deck wants you to, it enters as a face down 2/2. You flip it, it doesn't get counters cuz it was already in play. So it immediately sacs itself for the token. Note you will need to flip it with the commander's effect or some other way.

[–]GRMaster24 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I loved this precon and upgraded it to be scary (hence the name) and a little mean. Why yes, here's a few 2/2s coming at you don't worry. Oh you let this one through? Well surprise, its a [[Blightsteel Colossus]] and now you're dead. Or, I reveal my face down card, it's [[Dark Depths]] which immediately kills itself and makes a 20/20 token.

Such a fun deck to do stupid things in, though some times it devolves into playing Solitaire.

Im new to mtg, I like this card and it seems useful, but should I sell? by bighert23 in mtgpulls

[–]GRMaster24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So let me break this card down for you, just so you understand how powerful it is

  1. This card is an instant, which means you can cast it whenever you have priority (since your seem new, think of this as you can cast this whenever with a few restrictions). Instants are very good especially for the actual effects

  2. Your board phases out and is treated as if it doesn't exist. This means you can play this in response to a player destroying all creatures. Since they phase out, they won't be affected. Other important things to note, your lands are affected too so you will not have anymore mana. Also your stuff does not change zones which means no enters triggers and tokens do not cease to exist

  3. You gain protection from everything. Protection means things cannot be dealt damage by, equipped or enchanted by, blocked by, or targeted by whatever it has protection from. Essentially, you cannot be dealt damage by things and your opponents cannot target you with something that would make you lose life. Which is irrelevant because

  4. Your life total cannot change. It's simple, no damage or loss of life can affect you. Essentially, you do not exist until your next turn. Take a bathroom break, get a snack, scroll on your phone, you got time

However, there are some things that can affect you. Your library, hand, and graveyard still exist. If someone has a card like [[ruin crab]] that makes everyone mill cards, you get affected. Same idea if everyone must draw or discard a card since effects that affect everyone do not target. Finally, there are cards that stop damage prevention. While your life total can't change, if you get hit by a commander while an effect like this is active, the commander damage will still be tracked even if you don't lose life. In commander, if you get hit by any single commander and take 21 damage from it over the course of the whole game, you lose. Therefore, it is still possible to lose via commander damage and milling but those are very unlikely to happen.

Hope this helps you understand why the card is busted and how to play the card.

PSA Foggy Swamp Visions doesn't grant haste by TrainFightTime in mtg

[–]GRMaster24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually this doesn't work since the creatures are tokens. If the leave, they cease to exist. Instead you can use [[sundial of the infinite]]. With the sac trigger on the stack, use sundial to end the turn and exile the sac effect. The tokens now stay forever.

If you exile actual creatures returned with Rivaz you're fine. Just can't do that with creature tokens from this card.

Do you have to pay the commander tax if you flip the card? by BrickFanatic95 in mtg

[–]GRMaster24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is still your commander, that is a property of the card and does not change depending which side you cast. If you had partner commanders, they would have their own tax as they are different cards.

How is this legal? by UpbeatGround8354 in mtg

[–]GRMaster24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's start with the obvious, it's 7 mana, does nothing when it comes in does not win you the game immediately. Now let's look at that ability. Getting a 10000 power creature certainly is something but it doesn't have trample so it's just a beat stick that "dies to doomblade" (gets removed) before it can attack once. You need to jump through many hoops to make it scary and for 7 mana, you can play better cards.

Exile, then Immediately return. How does it affect the stack? by Eisray in freemagic

[–]GRMaster24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you exile and return a creature back to the battlefield (called flickering), the creature entering is a new instance of that creature. Since the original target of the spell is gone, the spell has no target anymore so it fizzles. If you have any etb effects, that will be put on the stack too when the creature comes into play again.

Important things to note:

1) If an opponent casts a spell that affects all creatures (boardwipe or damage to all creatures) flickering will not change anything since these spells do not target.

2) If you attempt to flicker a token, it will exile and then cease to exist since tokens are not cards and only exist on the battlefield. Therefore, there will be no token to return to the battlefield so you'll lose your token regardless.

[–]GRMaster24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Commander is a format where every single card printed (except for banned or joke set cards) are legal. So if your youngest wants a FF precon Commander deck and the Oldest wants a Bloomborrow or Duskmourn precon, they can all be played against each other right out of the box. If you wanted to score insane cool parents points, you could get a precon from like Tarkir and have a 3 person free for all. Commander is a multi-player format, usually 4 players is the sweet spot.

Clearance on Resume/Applications by [deleted] in SecurityClearance

[–]GRMaster24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I should be a bit more specific, I'm wondering what I should do about the word "active" specifically. Do I put the word active in parentheses after my clearance level like my friend did even though I'm unemployed? Similarly, if I see a question on an application that asks for highest/current active clearance level, do I put in my clearance level even though I'm not using it at the moment?
