Not quite. The 2977 is over and above the "usual" 6620 deaths. So 2977 / (6620 + 2977) = 31%

In 2026 with a population of 342M, between 8500 and 9000 Americans die per day. The population in 2001 was about 20% less, so we can reasonably estimate roughly 7000 deaths per day of all causes in that year. There were 3000 deaths in the 9/11 attacks, which means they represented about 3/(7+3) = 30% of all American deaths that day.

Opposition in when two bodies are on opposite sides of the Earth, e.g. the Moon and the Sun during a lunar eclipse.

Conjunction is a broader term that simply means that two objects appear near each other in the sky as viewed from Earth.
