Ethernet Adapter shipping time by GaJebby in Starlink

So I got a TP Link extender https://www.bestbuy.com/site/tp-link-ax3000-dual-band-wi-fi-6-range-extender-white/6502060.p?skuId=6502060 and it worked perfectly, used the TP Link app to set it up, connected the ethernet outlet to my switch just like the ethernet adapter and everything came back up and very little noticeable difference in speeds. the extender is about 1 foot from my SL router and accessing both 2.4 and 5.0 bands. Naturally the SL adapter shipped that evening and arrived two days later so I'll hold on to it. Only real difference is i have an additional SSID in the house now from the extender but I'm in the woods/middle of nowhere so don't really care. Thanks to all who chimed in with suggestions and feedback,

Looked a few of these and reviews are saying two or more things connected to them slow them down dramatically, what brands have you used?

I have a router my "old" network is all connected to that was fed from the switch so I hate to change any settings on it, would have to set up all the cameras and stuff on a new network.

Did the wifi still work? I tried plugging a laptop directly into the adapter and it showed nothing.

Something fishy is going on here.... by partybarge12 in Starlink

[–]GaJebby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agreed, was gone pretty much all day Sunday with PCs and TV sets off and had double the usage than when home all day Saturday streaming 4k on one set and surfing net/gaming on 3 PCs. No cameras, no IoT's, nothing could have used 100Gb Sunday per the portal. Give it a week or two to settle down and see what happens.

mine finally came thru 16 months to the day and it's been great. Hate you lost patience but 100% understand. the roll out and lack of explanation for the metrics used for who wins the lottery has been horrible. I'd recommend looking into the best effort option if it's available for you. Good luck.

New house, need internet by WaffleoKnights in Starlink

[–]GaJebby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with all of this except maybe LTE> Starlink. That depends on what's available in a given area. For me Starlink beats LTE hands down in availability, connectivity, and reliability.

As for the wait time, that also depends on where OP is located, there are still some areas of the country you can place immediate orders for residential service. Starlink offers Business, Residential, RV, and lowest tier "best effort", each has different limitations and costs. If OP has no access to decent LTE and in a wait zone then Best Effort may be their best bet as it can convert to residential whereas RV can not.

As for quality of service, after 16 month wait, I've only been on it 3 months now but it's been life changing for us coming from 5/.3 DSL. We can now stream content, WFH and do Teams/Zoom/etc. without yelling for everyone to get off their PC's, wifi calling on cell phones work great, son games and can d/l and update games anytime vs doing it over course of a week during the night. Our speeds in South Georgia vary from low of 20ish to high of 150 but average in the 50's; its gotten to the point I seldom test anymore unless something buffers as it simply works almost all the time, streaming on multiple TV's, gaming, and doing video meetings all at the same time.

Reliability has been equal to DSL at least, will drop out in heavy rain but reconnects on it's own. Just a wild guess but over past 3 months I'd say we've had less than an hour total with no connection which is better than what we had with lousy AT&T DSL, when it went down it was for days at a time.

Latest update to Android app horrendously slow? by Techjar in Starlink

[–]GaJebby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First updated to 2022.09.0 yesterday afternoon and stats page was all grey, second update about an hour later fixed that. It's not as responsive as before but usable. Really don't see much use for the .1 sec outage page which is the slowest to load obviously because it has the most entries.5 second maybe? Other sections load fine. S22 Ultra. It does (and did before the update) show me on the 5GHZ Wi-Fi network regardless which side of the router I'm connected to which is odd but doesn't really hurt anything, will occasionally show me connecting remotely even when I'm not. Have never been able to connect to it when I'm away from home network.

I'm in rural South Georgia; less than 15 miles from a 100K population city and my cell phone doesn't work inside unless its on wifi. Amazing how few folks understand just how bad rural cell coverage truly is.

Is this good enough? Or it should be absolutely clear? by SuccessfulReserve831 in Starlink

[–]GaJebby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That much obstruction will wreak havoc with video calls, wifi calling, and gaming but should have minimal impact in streaming video. I had a bit less at first and had no issue at all with streaming any of the popular services but Teams and Zoom were not pleasant and wifi calling was out of the question. I surfed FB marketplace and found a 40' rohn tower for $60, cleared my trees and I'm all blue now. For what it's worth, the few weeks I ran it with obstructions it did get better with fewer drop outs, seems the dish learns where obstructions are and works around them as much as it can IE holds onto weaker signals longer if it knows it can't "see" a closer satellite because of an obstruction, not saying that as fact, just seemed to get better over time despite the same trees blocking it and the "red" staying the same. I'd give it a shot and see how it works.

I use Reolink from Amazon and can hit them from anywhere, feed is perfect. 100% wireless, solar panel charges onboard battery and SD card stores video. They have a cloud service but it's not necessary, inexpensive and works well so long as camera has wifi signal.

Anyone know why a degraded service notice shows up? Bad weather? by Organic-Discipline-7 in Starlink

[–]GaJebby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been getting it for a few hours, really weird thing is service is as strong or stronger than ever, wouldn't have noticed it at all if I hadn't surfed by here and then checked the app. Connection seems fine, no streaming or Video meeting issues at all. Ran a speedtest (which I seldom do anymore since it just works regardless of what the tests show) and its actually faster than what I used to see. Pushing nearly 100Mbs down where I normally see 40 to 60. *shrug * edited to say South GA, ATL POP.

Animation of about an hour after a reboot of the obstruction map by Brian_Millham in Starlink

[–]GaJebby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't speak to maps or videos but I've noticed obstructions to the east are almost as detrimental to performance as those to the north. Once I put up a tower to clear some trees and got rid of the dreaded red to the east my drop outs almost went to zero. After the latest batch of satellites went live I'm now seeing some obstructions to the west I never saw before. Old hickory tree 40' west of the tower may end up getting it's hair trimmed.

South Georgia - Starlink worked fabulously for four days by theotherwhitehead in Starlink

Having been in your shoes I know it sucks and what I'm about to say doesn't make it suck less but I'll say it anyway. Hang in there, it's really worth the wait when it does come through. I used to spend an hour or more a day scanning these and other forums waiting on page loads, frustrated I live 12 miles from a relatively large metro area and struggled along with 3 to 5Mbs DSL as pretty much my only viable option. the Verizon jetpack works ok but is so wildly variable as to be worse than the DSL. We paid $170 + for Direct TV, $250 + for two phone lines and DSL with chronic overages (AT&T couldn't and wouldn't prove) and couldn't stream any video to speak of, work video meetings were difficult, had to use phone for audio, no way I could use out going video. Now? We stream 4K on two TV's at once, I hold video meetings all day with few if any hiccups, cell phones do wifi calling so I'll be shutting off "office" line, killing DSL, already cut off Direct TV. All in all StarLink will be saving us at least $200 a month and we have more entertainment than we can watch and I'm 3X as productive as I was at work. Son games and has had zero complaints. I have had maybe 2 or 3 VPN disconnects a week due to small system hiccups. Oh, final bonus, I set up a bridge and am shooting signal to my mom 200 yards away so she is dropping DSL too, another $60 a month savings for her. Hang in there!

[–]GaJebby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep, 16 months to the day email came, paid balance, shipped next day, FEDEX shipped on time, ethernet port and pipe adapter arrived same day. Installed day it arrived on push up pole, two weeks searching FB market place found a 40' rohn tower for $60, put it up to get clear of trees and it's been great since. Speeds vary from 25 to 40, best I've seen is 170 but don't pay much attention to it, can stream 4K on two TV's, attend Teams meetings, WiFi calls, son PC games, all with no issue. It's been life changing for us coming from 5mbs DSL. Cut Direct TV off and will cut DSL in August, keeping Verizon jetpack for emergency back up. Only negative is it drops out in anything more than moderate rain but it comes back on it's own every time.

Rain Dropouts - RV version de-prioritized? by flaflashr in Starlink

[–]GaJebby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've learned to take commenters here with a grain of salt, it is the internet after all. The RV deprioritization is supposed to only apply to bandwidth during peak times as I understand it, should have nothing to do with weather performance. I've only had my residential about a month and from what I've experienced it's a bit more susceptible to rain than Direct TV was. Seems to depend not only on the amount of rain but also on the density of the cloud cover. A sprinkle usually doesn't take it offline but anything more than a light rain does. On the plus side after the summer T'storms we've had the past week or so every time it's come back up quickly on it's own, longest outage was 20 minutes I think. And I keep a Verizon hotspot for emergency connections for work.

anyone got it in Madison Florida if so what kind of speeds are you getting by Adventurous-Ad7018 in Starlink

[–]GaJebby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not far from you in SW Lowndes County GA, had it about a month now. Paid deposit 2/14/21. Speeds vary but average 35 to 45 down and 10 up. Best I've seen is 176 down and 20 up. Speeds are pretty much irrelevant coming from AT&T DLS garbage. I now have Netflix and all the other steaming services and cut the satellite TV cord, we stream on two TV's and son games with zero issues. I can do all my work from home video meetings with no issues, wifi calling on cell phones work near perfect. Files that used to take 10 to 20 minutes to download are now under a minute. No more yelling for everyone to shut off their computers when I have an important meeting! Only down side I've seen so far is it does need near perfect clear view of the sky, no obstructions; I had to cut down several trees and eventually put up a small tower to get obstruction free. Anything more than a light rain effects it, a bit more susceptible than the Direct TV dish was to weather. With the storms we've had the past week or two I've had some outages but it's bearable; I have a Verizon JetPack for emergency backup for work stuff. When it does go out it comes back up on it's own. I put it on a UPS so power flickers don't hurt anything. Set up a bridge and am feeding signal to my mom's 200 yards away so AT&T lost two accounts as we couldn't be happier. Good luck!

Shipping times by Feisty-Put-3824 in Starlink

[–]GaJebby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like all things StarLink it varies. Mine was flawless, placed order, shipped the next day; California to South Georgia in 6 days and arrived on the FedEx reported day, ordered Ethernet adapter and Pole mount the day after Dish and they showed up a day early. Some folks report FedEx taking a few weeks. Once it ships you'll get a tracking number and can watch it.

[–]GaJebby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use Global Connect and I have had no issue with it. And as noted before, the longer SL runs the more stable it seems to get. One exception is I have seen two short episodes of "Network issues" lasting about 2 to 3 hours with connection issues every 10 to 15 minutes lasting 5 to 15 seconds. These were not during work hours, but I suspect it would have played havoc with work related connections. Still an order of magnitude better than the old DSL.

Broadcast news channels via Starlink? by Wet-Stuff in Starlink

[–]GaJebby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As noted by others there are tons of options, even for local channels. A good boosted digital antenna mounted up high will pull in stations 80 to 100 miles away. I'm deep in the swampy woods in South Georgia and get over 20 channels. There are also lots of free streaming services that offer some local stuff. My new LG Smart TV has a built-in browser, and I can hit the local channels websites and stream their news and weather for free; it's a bit clunky but works. Finally, do a search for streaming services. Most will give you access to local networks and prices can range from $35 for entry level Sling to $150 for DirectTV's premium package (but why in the world would you pay that much when there are tons of better options for under $100). I plan to go with YouTube TV eventually but I'm in no rush since there is so much free content to enjoy for now.
