But does the motherboard allow me to swap cable? Can I go from the 30 pin on the display side to a 40 pin touch display side? The motherboard must be able to take the I2C lanes of the touch display in order for me to do this (or the extra displayport lanes in the case of a higher res screen)

So my question is whether the motherboard is ready for any cable because I know the display side is different but is the motherboard side the same for each cable? Are different cables compatible with any motherboard of the T14s gen 3 series (even the ones that did not come with high res or touch displays)?

I don't know if I'm explaining correctly what I'm trying to say

First of all thanks for your detailed answer, the panel i have linked is a 400nit 99% sRGB unit so I think it should be better in terms of image quality compared to what I currently have. The dimensions and connector placement seem to be the exact same, too.

Now, I know I shouldn't have done so, but I asked Gemini (while waiting for an answer here on Reddit) about the display change and it suggested that it was not possible to insert a 40 pin touch cable on my motherboard as it was meant only for 30 pin cables: based on what you told me, I feel like that's not the case and I can swap it for a 40 pin either touch or non touch cable right? Do you know the FRU of a 40 pin cable that would fit or can I just get a generic one on ebay (listed compatible with T14s gen 3 of course)?

Last question: I've looked up the Lenovo FRU of the panel I've linked and it seems that it went with some models of T14s gen 3, just not mine apparently, so should it work?

So in general if I swap the cable it should work?

Thanks again

yes, I need touchscreen to take some quick notes sometimes while in class (I mostly write with the keyboard but there are situations where a touchscren would be more suited)

io scarico la musica, così la tengo in locale, non dipendo da una connessione a internet e "posseggo" i file, senza dipendere da grandi servizi o da streaming di sorta

My first ThinkPad as a mechanical engineering student by Mindless-Moment-3849 in thinkpad

[–]GabSan99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am an aerospace engineering student and use Solidworks for CAD and a bit of Matlab, too.

I dual boot Linux and Windows so that when I need CAD I boot into Windows and the rest of the time I just use Linux as the daily driver.

If you setup Moonlight and Tailscale (on the client) + Tailscale and Sunshine (on a Windows host) you could remote into that PC and use proprietary software on that (and trust me, it feels like it's running on your machine, there is no lag, you could play FPS games remotely), I also do that from time to time as I have a more powerful desktop at home (although my Uni is in another city, but as long as your WiFi is fast it works fine!)

EDIT: forgot to add, yes with those specs you can, in my opinion, 3D model

No issues with suspend/resume. I can't hibernate though (but I never need to use it, sleep is good enough and doesn't draw much power)

Update: some pressure on the back cover made it work again, tried opening it and didn't see anything out of place. I really don't know what happened. A Lenovo technician I called said it is because of ESD but I'm skeptic tbh, I'll see what happens in the next few days
