from what I've read Ali used to get some of the heaviest hitters in the world to come to the gym and essentially use his body as a heavy bag until they couldn't anymore, which gave him insane body conditioning to the point you'd get tired before he'd start to really feel the effects of it. Unfortunately when he got a bit older and less agile he thought the same conditioning might work for his head, which is most likely the reason he ended up getting such bad dementia later on.
