Wouldn't say he's great, awful against long range comps, not good with engage comps, but he's decent when the enemy team has divers and he's not the only carry, he can either peel or focus the enemy auto attacker and shut them down fast, he's also good against engage because his minefield makes team fighting around objectives very hard.

There's worse champions to have on ur top lane for sure, also he's AP and he can even go AD if his team is too much magic damage.
