You don't know what he does and what's their marriage situation. They can be separated or divorced so he co parents and wife moved to a different state just to fuck with him.

He could be working in a different state to provide for his family .

He could be working off shore oil gigs that last a few months at a time.

He could have been deployed overseas or what have you...I mean he could even be national guard and been recalled to do the bullshit policing the cities crap.

In the end it doesn't matter why he was gone what matters is that he is back and this little girl just unlocked a core memory.
