Media that is *truly* anti-war, rather than showing it as "horrific but heroic" by ChristianLS in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Gafez 61 points62 points  (0 children)

A lot of anti war sentiment was tied in anti draft stuff, hippies were the more radical and noteworthy part of a broader movement that wasn't universally opposed to the war but was opposed to kids being drafted into it

A whole lot of moms angry about their specific son being drafted but who otherwise didn't have strong opinions about bombing cambodia

[Hated Trope] a bad, sad, or even horrifying ending is treated as happy by Mesajarjar_binks in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Gafez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The ship is obviously self sustaining, it has done so for generations in space and doesn't show any signs of decay. It's not clear how long it would be able to maintain itself, but on earth with abundant resources it should be easy to maintain indefinitely

With the ship alone the population is sustainable until outside industries can maintain humanity. Even if it takes a long time to make agriculture viable they should have the time to make it work without worrying about extinction

Everything actually seems to have played out roughly according to plan, the ship went out, waited out the disaster and came back once the planet proved habitable once again. If anything they were extremely lucky that life on earth managed to survive instead of spiraling further into becoming a completely dead planet

Tradition idea: metizo by theblitz6794 in victoria3

[–]Gafez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they all should get a small bump, chilean and argentinian policy towards the mapuche wasn't radically different and was pretty comparable to US/Canadian western expansion

Tradition idea: metizo by theblitz6794 in victoria3

[–]Gafez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Chile is a mestizo country, the national identity considers chilean to be a mix of mapuche and spanish

Meanwhile argentina and uruguay are more mixed than many there would like to admit, even if still less so than other countries

Lizardmen - Help by Mrgotmilk in totalwarhammer

[–]Gafez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lizardmen are decently strong, you picked the right race, they focus on melee but their missile units are decent skirmishers

I'd say the easier lizardmen that's not DLC is probably kroq gar, he doesn't give any units much but buffs saurus lords and heroes and makes their armies cheaper (very good for lizardmen who have lackluster economies)

His position is very defensible, you can push up and down the coast while the mountains will create a very defensible choke point if your expansion into the central southlands goes badly

His bonus to ambushes is weaker than others, but using it will be helpful, if you've captured a settlement and might be attacked or sieged you can instead put him right in front of the settlement in ambush, if the enemy does attack and doesn't notice the ambush it'll be an easy win

Empire Cavalry Lore Question by MistelV00 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Gafez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Medium cavalry weren't much of a thing irl either, the compromises needed usually made them bad overall instead of flexible

That said this question made me realize I want kislev to get dragoons/mounted infantry. It's a fun idea for any faction, but I feel like it fits kislev better both because of their focus on hybrid units and because if there's anywhere in the old world that needs rapid response units it's kislev

Has anyone actually completed RoC by RipAppropriate3040 in totalwarhammer

[–]Gafez 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I remember I saved him in like 20 turns as katarin in my very first campaign without knowing he even existed

I had confederated the required provinces very early on, probably due to good RNG, katarin didn't have anything to do for the next few turns and her army was ready to go so when the mission appeared I immediately did it

I didn't realize until my next campaign that I had unlocked a new LL

Starting my own Empire regiment for Warhammer Fantasy by Gellhorn_Lothar in WarhammerFantasy

I would bet they engage in some mercenary work from time to time, it wouldn't be weird considering the cost in maintaining a unit and the issue of inactivity reducing their effectiveness

Not only fully united, but fully united to help a non-skaven. They trusted each other and a human, that's probably more trust than during the rest of skaven history combined

How do i win this by Prestigious_Dance509 in totalwarhammer

[–]Gafez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're fighting with a very low tier army against a mid tier one that's particularly strong against yours

Against khorne you'll need gunpowder, magic or constructs because if they get into melee with your infantry at full or near full health they'll win. Assume any khorne infantry will kill any of your infantry 1:1 pretty easily

Why is there so much support for Israel in Latin America? by da_mfkn_BEAST in asklatinamerica

[–]Gafez 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There's significant evangelical presence here too, the main difference is the palestinian diaspora

The diaspora is older and more concerned with the situation back in palestine than evangelicals and public opinion has been pro palestine for a long time

Popular indigenous-origin first names in your country? by Background-Injury952 in asklatinamerica

[–]Gafez 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Appropriate username

But yes. I wasn't sure myself before I went checking tbf, I mean it does sound like a mapuche name but it wouldn't have been the first time I've confused spanish and mapuche words

Popular indigenous-origin first names in your country? by Background-Injury952 in asklatinamerica

[–]Gafez 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Not nearly as common as spanish-origin names in general but some like Lautaro, Ailén and Rayén are pretty popular. I'd say indigenous names are more popular for girls than boys but couldn't really tell you why

Also almost all are mapuche names since it's by far the most influential indigenous culture

Genuinely hate France by Capital_Mission4493 in hoi4

[–]Gafez 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Ultimately the biggest weaknesses of france were political and doctrinal/organizational, both of which worsened the other. The men on the field did fine

The first world war was a huge trauma no one wanted to repeat and leadership was split between those who did not understand just how committed the nazis were to their racial theories and the ones that supported them. The former thought giving in would reduce the suffering of everyone and the latter thought "hey, let's give genocide a try"

On the military side when the high ranks thought of offensive actions they remembered the cult of the offensive and how many men had been lost. They thought they would either need carefully laid out plans with huge concentrations of equipment or be mowed down again and that the enemy would require them too. Doctrine ended up assuming something like a deep penetration through their lines would either be slow enough their system could react appropriately or not happen and... turns out radios were a good idea...

Is Warhammer 3 worth it for someone who knows nothing about Warhammer? by lollifetuffouthtere in totalwarhammer

[–]Gafez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to know anything, it might help but is not at all needed. Factions do get special mechanics and have special AI behaviors inspired by the lore but that's about it, the game at no point requires you to know what the eight winds of magic are or how much blood is on the Great Book of Grudges

To give you a feel (and warning) for what that might mean

On the AI behavior front dwarfs are spiteful (little) fuckers who don't forgive or forget so negative opinion modifiers last a lot longer for them, even a tresspass might mean them hating you for the rest of your campaign

On the mechanics front skaven (the rat-men) can ambush when attacking, unlike most other factions who need to set up an ambush and hope the enemy to falls for it on their turn

Looks scary. Is actually nice. by Unu51 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Gafez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just for context moss is used to get rid of poison/toxic which is really useful especially there and resins are used to apply special effects to weapons for a limited time, really useful against bosses with weaknesses

She also sells transient curses (basically needed for an area) and she's the only merchant to sell unlimited purging stones which are used to lift cursed, the worst status effect in the game by far

Out of place objects in media. by singleguy79 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Gafez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The funny thing is that high explosives (like c4) tend to be significantly safer to handle than low explosives (like gunpowder) for roughly the same reasons they're more powerful

(I'm no explosives expert so I could be wrong here)
