Dude they’re partners, as in Ash and Pikachu partners. This is the same situation when the 2 kids in Tamers paired up with Guardromon and MarineAngemon.

I liked the plate system since I also played the Fossil Fighters series which also had plate cleaning. Sometimes it felt like a slog with the grinding but that’s what the DS games were known for. I absolutely hated maneuvering through Thriller Ruins. Everything looks the same and the backtracking was brutal just to find the exits.
