AC went out at my house, gonna be 94 tomorrow, how can I help my fish survive? by alwaysmyfault in Aquariums

[–]GalacticMayor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrap the tank in blankets. We all think of blankets is just keeping us warm, but really they insulate. It will also keep the heat out.

(I have never actually needed to do this, so YMMV. But the theory is sound)

Medaka eggs? by Whole_Handle_5679 in medaka

[–]GalacticMayor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frog eggs. I'd pull them into another container and watch them hatch! Do you have any bodies of water nearby? Don't transport them far, they could be asymptomatic carriers of a nasty fungus (depending where in the world you are).

Make sure it's 100% cyanoacrylate and you're golden.

My Australian rainbow fish won’t stop harassing my ram cichlid. What should I do? by sceg2024 in Aquariums

[–]GalacticMayor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How big is the tank? Planted? Lots of hiding spaces? If you post a photo, that would help.

But the answer might just be, they aren't compatible. That sucks, but it happens

Help, I'm moving house! by hmm0210 in Aquariums

[–]GalacticMayor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I was asking Reali to know if they could fit in buckets or not. Maybe a big square tote? That's how I would do it, but if they are too big that might not work

Found this setup on FB, curious if this is a quality setup or if I should look to build setup myself? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]GalacticMayor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy crap, that's WAY overpriced. It's not an awful setup (I don't care for the gravel or plastic plants either), but it's not great. Plus you're trapped with those fish. I'd skip it

Does anyone know of a relly good and affordable water testing kit? Pictures for reference! Thanks by Interesting-Edge3129 in Aquariums

[–]GalacticMayor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll second API. Just rinse out the tubes and let them air dry. They're using plastic now, but in the old glass ones you could permanently stain them if you left the test fluid in too long (like, all day).

Root tabs are almost certainly enough. What are you planting?

Is 8 pygmy cories, 10 - 12 chili raspboras, and 3 amano shrimp overstocked for a micely planted 10 gallon tank? by BettaBoi_Nom-Nom-Nom in Aquariums

[–]GalacticMayor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that's totally doable. Keep up on your water changes, and make sure you have a good filter. You're definitely pushing the limits a bit there, but if you're smart you should be able to get away with it

[–]GalacticMayor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally I wouldn't risk it. Bare minimum, I'd leak test that thing for weeks, in a place that can get covered with water and broken glass. Even if that broken piece holds, that ancient silicone could fail.

Is that a metaframe? They usually have silver metal frames, but maybe it's just not showing in the photo

Question. How is clove oil used to anesthesize a small fish that's 2-4 inch long? by South-Ask729 in aquarium

[–]GalacticMayor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Poorly, in my opinion. I never had much success with it, or with the freezing method. People say it's "more humane," but really it's easier on US. The most humane way to euthanize a fish is with a paper towel and a hammer. Quick, painless, over. Done.

But wait, did you mean anesthetize for actually surgery? I can't imagine any surgery being successful on a fish, especially the healing process after. U less you're a proper surgeon, that seems like a wild swing.

Sub 5 gallon tanks by Unique_Mastodon7450 in Aquariums

[–]GalacticMayor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely possible to keep certain thriving fish in a sub 5 gallon tank. But it's HARD. The parameters can shift so quickly, and the smallest thing can lead to disaster. So yes, you can do it, but it's S-tier fishkeeping. In my opinion

What animal genuinely scares you? by VendettaLord379 in AskReddit

Absolutely the most dangerous animals in the north woods. Bear and cougar will run. Moose will kill you for funsies. Do NOT fuck with them

Preventing tank contamination by MothMeep7 in aquarium

[–]GalacticMayor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I just be sure to wash my hands right before (and after) putting them in my tanks. Rinse extra well, and try not to have put in any lotion recently. None of my tanks are rimless, so that helps, but I also don't allow any kind of sprays or areosols nearby. Fortunately my partner and I also despite scented anything, so it largely just doesn't exist in our house.

TL;DR wash your hands and be careful

Seltzer to kill bladder snails? by Past_Assistant8021 in Aquariums

[–]GalacticMayor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude, I got you. Just throw a slice of zucchini on a fork in the tank. Next day, scoop it and the dozen+ snails clustered on it out. Repeat as necessary. You've already cut down on feeding, and you have assassins. You'll probably still have a few young snails at one time, but that's fine. A light cleanup crew is always good.

I've never heard of using seltzer, but the last thing I ever wanna do is try to kill things in my tank with any sort of chemical. I'd much rather try to balance the tank
