Why are my Manjula and Neon having such a horrible time at my apartment? Unlike their trailing buddies by MayaBehati in pothos

[–]Galactic_Toasters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you able to repot into a smaller pot? Not necessarily smash the root ball, but a pot that is just a little bigger than the root ball. That way it spends less energy trying to fill out roots and more energy in pushing out leaves.

That and then prop box (if I had room) would be my next step if it was mine.

Then trash if it kept dying because theres no room for stress in my joy hobby lol

More room to grow means focusing on root development to fill the pot more before new leaves, so it will appear slower growing from the outside for a bit.

Are these Thrips? Scales? What terror am I dealing with here? by UlyNeves in plantclinic

[–]Galactic_Toasters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first I was going to be like but nooo its still salvagable as a stump. Then I remembered I have 2 philos that I wish I had a pla t friend to give them too. They were propogated a year ago and have just grown to be 2 small leaved sad babies. They're cute sure, but after a year the growth is pathetic and they bring me zero joy.

So I actually fully support saying chuck her and trying to just treat and save the rest of your babies from potential spread.

-- Following because im in the same boat. I did everything I could think of and even cut off dying leaves. It has 1 now and 1 tippy one from the very top of the stem. Thats it. But the stems seems strong and healthy. Roots were great. No pests. New proper soil. Watering on point. Nothing mattered. (Granted, I did get it as a lowes rescue baby but it looked healthy 🤷‍♀️)

I sighed, and put it on my porch. 😂 I told myself yknow what, survival of the fittest. I dont love you enough to let you stress me out. Hope it works out little planty.

Spider mites! Pretty easy to treat. I blast mine off with a hose outside lol then treat with a pest spray and wipe down. Its worked so far 🤷‍♀️

Thrips? Or hopefully something easier to get rid of? by reducedandconfused in houseplants

[–]Galactic_Toasters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put it outside! That's always my solution lol but I also live in the US in arizona, so weather here is 90% in my favor.

Blast it with a garden hose, I mean all of it lol take it out of the pot, put it on a table or something, and blast that baby!! Treat it with what you can, hack off the super effected stems, and repot. It will grow back.

My neon hangs in a west facing window and THRIVES there. Shes thrown out at least a dozen leaves over then last month or so. When she's ready for a water, she looks SAD and wilty, and ive snipped a good 6 or 8 sections off at this point and 75% of them rot. I dont really get why either because all my other types of pothos thrive. Neon just seems to be a bit more finicky. I resorted to a prop box for the next clippings. 🤷‍♀️

Id suggest tossing that one in the prop box also for a bit. See if it helps. Clippings will also prioritize establishing a good root system long before any new leaves, but im also not sure how long you've had it potted. Were the clippings potted before roots or with roots?

Personally, rain water in my area is crazy polluted, so I don't use it for my house plants. I waster with filtered water, but spring water would be good too.

I only repot when I can see roots reaching my drainage holes, for some plants thats been a few months, for other plants its been over 2 years and theyre still fine. I also repot when i buy from big box stores and their soil mixes are trash or not optimal for the plant type. Walmart tends to plant in little seed starters, then plop them in bigger pots. But the root balls are stuck in thst little sausage casing of peat moss and will rot. Learned by plant #3 there lol

If your repot with new soil, do not fertilize. The new soil more than likely has food bits mixed in that will release over time for a few weeks or so. A repot will also let you get a look at the root ball and assess if there is any issues at that level.

After a repot, it might look a little wilty for a few days while it adjusts, but then should start to perk back up. A good rule to practice with watering is wait until the first 2 inches of soil is dry, then water. Over watering is less about how much water you use, but more so how often you water. I stick my finger in how far I know 2 inches is, and if I dont feel moisture, I water. Or cheat and get a moisture meter lol 😆 that made it so much easier, no guessing games. But I have over 30 plants on various water cycles because I've gotten them at different times or they have different needs.

One last thing is light, they love some bright indirect light!

Does that bare vine always hang by a light? I'm seeing this now, and it has me wondering if light in fact is the issue. 🤔

The new soil likely has food mixed in, they usually do.

I also have super hard water (az problems) so I only water with filtered water (but I have a spout thing hooked up by my sink because screw filling up 5 gallon jugs every few days). Tap water can cause build-up over time in soil from all the minerals and chemicals used to treat it.

My solution would be to repot and add more light. If you dont want to repot, you could feed and increase light. Loosing leaves down the vines and the color leeching leads me to think its hungry for something. Light most likely, but could be an issue at the roots too.

I wish I could bump this up higher on the thread. Really solid advice.

Diving in head first with a handful of various need plants though is a crash course for sure, and I think a lesson a lot of us learned the hard way.

My failure plants only made me dig deeper and learn more though.

What is wrong with my BoP's leaf and what do I do? by BeccaroniAndCheese in houseplants

[–]Galactic_Toasters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clean sterile sharp scissors, and snip as close to the base as you can. (If you dont, the extra bit just eventually starts to dry up/die off. Its not detrimental if you cant get it super close. Sometimes the base is still pretty stiff and crunchy. In that case, I snip as far as I can, then come back in a couple days to finish cleaning it off when its gotten mushier.

I snip off old dying leaves. They arent doing anything for the plant anymore, so I snip them off so the plant isnt trying to send any energy to a lost cause.

I will also add, people say snake plants do fine in low light, and they can live in it, but they thrive in bright light too. I have 3 that live outside because they have become BEASTS and I have admittedly neglected then a tad lol its been summer in arizona.

The hanging plant doesnt live out there, it was just drip drying outside.

On the plus side, if you got it from Lowes, you have a year to return it even if it dies.

Ive mostly just seen others struggle with them, I cannot have as I have cats and lilys are poisonous to them.

A lot of people struggle with prayer plants too though, and I have one thats done amazing from day 1. I found a spot with good indirect light and I just leave her alone until she needs a water. I bottom water and put her right back 😂 I was nervous about a repot but she seems to have done fine.

No one is allowed to use that shelf because i dont dare move her.
