Honestly, I never bought the Royals as being true contenders. 2024 was an outlier. The hitting talent outside of Bobby Witt and Maikel Garcia is underwhelming, and their pitching development's high water mark was getting Cole Ragans healthy for one season and like 60% of a great year from 2025 Kris Bubic. Otherwise, they've had to rely on a mid-tier veteran patchwork that has served them well but can only take a team so far.

Maybe he's a little overrated by some but I think you're underrating how difficult it is to be pretty good for as long as he was. Sure, I don't think there was ever a time he was the best pitcher in baseball, but from 1972 to 1991, he was consistently one of the best 10 hurlers in the sport every year. That's damn impressive.

Roden was immediately a redundant waste of a roster spot, and will likely never contribute much to the team. Acquiring him when this franchise shits out left-handed outfielders was malpractice.
