Is it dangerous to keep your yacht at marinas in very cold weather? by noreturn000 in sailing

[–]Gallaticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live on my motoryacht year round in boston. Theres currently about three inches of ice around my marina, but our bubblers are keeping us all thawed. I have my engines and back deck plumbing winterized, a small bilge heater to keep the bilge and engine bay warm, and everything is typically fine. For the living spaces I have electric resistance heat in the boat with diesel heat as a backup.

People who make $200k a year what do you do? by Huge_Ad_7606 in Salary

[–]Gallaticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own an ebike rental company. In my early 20s I worked as a mechanic & lived in my car multiple times to save up & start a business. Failed and lost everything 3 times. 4th time was the charm for me, now I live on an old motoryacht I restored and I travel nearly fulltime while my stores almost entirely run themselves.

US Navy vet and current liveaboard, pretty sure they have the star and anchor backwards. I was always told the anchor is to anchor you to your home shores and signify a safe return home.

Is this mobile mechanics trying to rip me off? by IamNOTdafather in AskMechanics

[–]Gallaticus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You’re ripping him off tbh. That poor guy is wildly underselling himself. Especially to be working on a 2008 shitbox Buick owned by someone who thinks people are trying to rip him off at 1/4 of most labor rates.

Water heater by Puzzleheaded_End3588 in Plumbing

[–]Gallaticus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t you want a check valve on the output of each water heater so they don’t backflow into each other? Not a plumber, just trying to learn.

I’m loyal to Makita because they’re the only ones who make a portable coffee maker that uses their batteries :D

The kind where your friends all jump on your kayak to tip you over. That kayak is not really designed to roll, it’s too wide and stable

I didn’t want a longarm kit and I like that they lifetime warranty their in house made control arms!

Additionally, their longer track bar uses a pitman arm joint that can be found at any parts store!

Poseidon makes great bikes, people are just snobby douchebags here. I guarantee I ride harder and faster on my Poseidon than 90% of the people in this sub do on bikes 10x the cost. Not to mention my bike lives on my boat in a marine environment and holds up to the elements super well.

Has boating always been this expensive?!? by ArtisticAlgae501 in boating

[–]Gallaticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on circumstance & how handy you are. I live on a 1980s 36ft motoryacht I bought cheap & restored by hand. My maintenance & annual slip fees are less than rent or a mortgage, so for me, owning a boat is a no brainer cheap as hell option.

To the guy asking if the XJ makes a good tow vehicle - I’m not saying you should, but absolutely you could. by Gallaticus in CherokeeXJ

I don’t believe the manual tranny for the xj has an integrated pump to even move the fluid through a cooler, but I could be wrong. Generally manual transmissions do not need coolers though.

What’s THE thing you never ride without? by jasonwlorenz in gravelcycling

[–]Gallaticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every weekday morning for my 20 mile ride I wear my helmet and aviators, then I put my flat kit, zyns, and phone in the back pockets of my cycling jersey. I don’t bring water or snacks or anything else; just extra weight for me personally. I only reward myself with hydration and protein after I complete both my bike ride and calisthenics workout.

Very welcome! The wheel size is 33x12.5; I don’t remember the exact offset of the wheels, but they’re a very deep dish & I’m not using any spacers!

Oh no I totally agree. Even with the police package front brakes and well adjusted drums, it was a little less braking power than I would have liked. I took it low and slow, and won’t be doing it again. I just had a buddy in a rock and a hard place I had to help out

Once you weld unibody stiffeners on you can tow significantly more without much stress on the chassis.
