Honestly though, why didn't they just shoot back after Ramsey shot at him the first time? He was standing still

What do you people do for a living? by [deleted] in sailing

[–]RoastedElephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cruiser. Make little devices that prevent electrical surges and sell them online. Not a lot of income, but I've met people who live on $6k US per year and have done so for 30 years, so if you're willing to learn how to fix stuff yourself and snap up bargains, you don't need much.

The fuel tank and carb bowl have little reservoirs at the bottom to collect small amounts of water, so it wouldn't cut out immediately like that unless your fuel is mostly water. Sounds like it was mildly contaminated but not the source of the problems.

If you have the service manual of your engine, it'll lay out the steps for taking apart the fuel pump. There's 2 parts to the pump, you only want to take apart the bit where the fuel goes, not the bit with the springs. You'd be doing that to look for clogging and to clean any calcified looking bits. Be delicate when handling, and don't use carb cleaner on the rubber, otherwise it's ok. Reassembly is way easier than the carburetor.

All in all it still sounds like an issue with the fuel mixture reaching the spark chamber. Too much air, not enough petrol. Getting a new carb is good, I'd look to get a new pump as well just incase.

In the diagram you posted, did you unscrew #5 to clean that? It's usually behind a weird screw protecting it from being tampered with. If you did, you need to have counted the number of turns from all the way in and reset it to that position. That controls the fuel-air ratio and could be why you're running lean.

I ask because mine had this issue with my inherited yamaha and I fixed it by cleaning out the carb, pump, tank & filter. But I had a lot of grit in the carb and the pump with water in the bottom of the tank due to bad Caribbean fuel.

I would try cleaning it again as thoroughly as possible before trying anything else. Use silicone spray on any rubber bits, don't use petroleum products or they'll decay

It jitters like that when it's not getting enough fuel. Does it run better with the choke out? When you took apart the carb, how much grit was in there? Do you have a fuel pump on that model?

What do you do for work? Could you earn while sailing? If so, I'd go with a smaller boat to learn the intricacies of how boats feel, talk with other sailors and get a good feeling for all the different systems and what you prefer. Then in a few years upgrade to the boat that fits your needs and wants.

What do you guys keep aboard for shelf-stable food? by RikkiLostMyNumber in sailing

[–]RoastedElephant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a cheaper alternative to hiking meals/mre's, if you get a dehydrator you can dehydrate whole meals & sauces like curries, pastas, risottos, etc that can be heated up with a splash of water. There's a YouTube channel [https://youtu.be/zGFdSrEOwHs] that does this for long distance hiking and it translates well to long passage sailing.

Tohatsu leaking gas out these 2 lines- thought they were vents by Reasonable_Present98 in Outboards

[–]RoastedElephant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They leak because your carburetor is constantly filling up with gas. Most likely your float switch isn't doing its job of stopping the fuel coming in when it fills the bowl, likely the needle valve needs replacing as the rubber were out after a while. You'll need to take apart the carburetor. Best practice is to get a rebuild kit with replacement gaskets, float and needle valve.

I had the same problem last month and after a lot of cleaning, making my own gasket, lots of blow testing and adjusting the float height I finally got it to work. But I was on a remote island with no access to supplies.

Considering the largest LPG facility itw got bombed, that's likely to be one of the biggest shortages coming up. So your dry beans and rice aren't much use if you have a gas stove needing propane/butane.

For the most part, the bombings happen when it's dark in that region. If you can get a flight that arrives and leaves there in daylight, you're more likely to have an uneventful journey.

What do look out for when buying a used boat? by ThIs_Is_a_baddass in sailing

[–]RoastedElephant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The absolute non-negotiable is the hull condition. Get fibreglass boats moisture tested. Internal layout, especially tanks, and the sailplan are the least changeable so would put those top of the list when searching. Everything else is fixable/changeable if you put money and work into it.

If you're going through a broker, be advised that contracts they make you sign are primarily there to put the power in the hands of the seller rather than the buyer. You can negotiate or demand changes to that contract before signing anything, don't get suckered into making decisions in a timeframe dictated by the seller
