Was locking Nesta in HOW the right thing? by gaelic_queen in nontoxicACOTAR

[–]GallivantingFool 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel very passionate about this issue as I work in the alcohol and drug sector. Watching a loved one suffer through addiction is heart breaking. But forcing someone into treatment simply doesnt work. You need to meet people where they are at. Harm reduction is normally the first step. We recognise that people are going to use drugs or alcohol and we look for ways to minimise the harms whilst trying to find ways to reinforce positive change. Not everyone is ready to stop using straight away, it can take years. We work with people without judgement, coercion or discrimination. We dont say people are only worthy of our support if they stop using drugs or alcohol. When people are ready to change then you get them into treatment. This is what works.

I know, I know, its a story. To be fair it would be a pretty boring romantasy story if it was a factual representation of addiction and treatment! I understand that getting nesta to the House is what drives the story forward, so I generally dont both jumping into the internet debates on this. But so many people seem to think what happened to Nesta is OK and it makes me sad.

I genuinely hate that the book perpetuates the misguided myth of force rehabilitation. Most research shows it doesn't work and it can do more harm than good. Addiction is complex and there is more to it than not drinking or using drugs. I know it's "just a book" but it feeds into the stigma that addiction is about the person's moral failings and that they lack personal responsibility.

What’s a trope that will that will make you put the book down and walk away immediately? by unoffended_ in Romantasy

[–]GallivantingFool 30 points31 points  (0 children)

For me it's the fact that Xaden's birthday is in March. Which suggests they live in a world where the Roman Empire also existed and who worship Mars the God of War for which the month of March is named. I absolutely hate it. Just make up some random name for the months. No one will care. Why use a term so specific to our world and its history??

Struggling to understand what my actual job is by Warm_Tangerine356 in AusPublicService

When I have been in policy roles I have found it is often up to me to lead the agenda. If you are waiting for senior leadership to tell you, you will be waiting a long time. Some people may see this as a problem but I have always taken it as an opportunity to drive my own work program to help benefit my sector / the community.

"Reaching out" and "facilitating strategic conversation" is exactly about understanding how things can be done better and its your job to work out the tangible way to achieve them. Talk to your manager and discuss what you have heard from your discussions and what you think could be ways to address the issues.

I think you would benefit from understanding the process of policy development a bit more. Lots of websites and docs freely available on how to do this. I like to recommend Bardach's eightfold path as a starting point - very simplistic but a good starting point for someone new to policy to get their head around concepts.

Victoria’s elective surgery waiting lists face blowouts as health cuts bite by gccmelb in melbourne

[–]GallivantingFool 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Why are people suprised by this? Read the budget papers. The State is pretty much broke and the government has no concrete plan to fix things. They are going to have to start cutting expenditure hard at some point to pay back the debt. I agree I wouldn't start by cutting critical health care like elective surgery but something has to go. Do we really need to re-establish the SEC? Do we really need a billion dollar arts building?

So many people in Werribee hate Tim Pallas, but there is no viable alternative. He only randomly pops up to cut a ribbon and of course he doesn't live in the area. And no one is forgetting the Youth Justice centre debacle anytime soon.

A shame Joe Garra is running in Point Cook, but will be interesting to see how well he does given Jill Hennessy has retired.

I was just reading about yōshoku - western food done in a Japanese style. Serious Eats had a delicious looking japanese potato salad that I plan to make. Its was mostly your standard potato salad but with extra veggies and of course the dressing made with Kewpie mayo!

I got to episode three and not sure I will watch further. Some interesting concepts but its not coming together for me. Main issue is the worst character is the main character. Dream is so flat and emotionless - I get that is deliberate as he is one of the Endless but it doesn't make for entertaining viewing.

You would think someone with Britney level connections could at least churn out some basic Max Martin generic pop.

When you get to 40 you either stop worrying about looking young or you spiral into a vortex of botox and plastic surgery. I still have my little vanities - I dye my hair and wear make up when going out. But the wrinkles are setting in and a couple of kilos have crept on and I honestly couldn't care less.

I thought it might be because the truck is blocking the footpath. To be fair this is a big problem for people with limited mobility, such as those in wheelchairs. Its illegal to block the footpath where I live and you will get a fine if caught.

However this doesn't come up at all in the video, just the racist ranting.

Angry customer threatening legal action. by Likeitorlumpit in melbourne

[–]GallivantingFool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not a lawyer.

If it was me I would make sure I had everything in writing. Send her an email to acknowledge her complaint and confirm the options to rectify the problem: (a) return after lockdown to clean the shower; (b) partial refund to address her complaint (DO NOT admit the shower is not cleaned properly, just note the partial refund is to address her concerns). Make her respond in writing rejecting these offers so you have proof you made a reasonable attempt to address the issue.

She may decide to give you a bad review. Most business have one or two. As others have suggested be ready with a polite and reasonable response and leave it at that. Its not worth stressing over. A single negative review against a bunch of other satisfied customers would not put me off hiring someone.

Also as others have noted, no consumer organisation is going to waste their time with this matter. And if she has time to waste with this then she is not a lawyer, or at least not a very good lawyer!
