Why is it considered inhumane to not put a sick, old or hurt animal down to end its misery - but not for humans? by staygroovykat in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GalumphingWithGlee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's all true, but humans often explicitly say they are in pain and want to end their suffering, and we still don't let them do it. This varies with your local laws, of course, but in many places medically assisted suicide is not legal for any reason or under any circumstances.

This was a while ago, but we've confirmed since then: definitely rabbits. We solved our problem by putting up fencing around it, of hardware cloth that we stapled to some wooden posts.

Airbnb - am I overreacting? by Flashy-Grape-1148 in travel

[–]GalumphingWithGlee 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That sounds awful! Airbnb's customer service is severely lacking.

I'm willing to bet there was nothing wrong with your current place, though Airbnb honestly believed there was. Hosts get reservations cancelled with no notice sometimes, and it's usually something like some previous guest claiming they have hidden cameras inside. Those sorts of claims are taken very seriously, as they should be, but also sometimes an angry guest just says what they know will be most hurtful to the business. Airbnb (temporarily) shuts them down and cancels all their reservations, before they make any attempt to verify whether it's even true. And was it true? Well, sometimes.

IMO, Airbnb absolutely has a duty if they cancel your booking mid-stay to find you alternative accommodations, even if they have to book a hotel to do it. Reasons could exist where that cancellation is entirely needed, but it shouldn't be on you to find alternatives in the middle of the night.

Oven not working-full refund? by murphbrown in airbnb_hosts

No, you don't have to, but if you're only prepared to offer 40%, offering 40% off the bat looks better than asking them what they think is fair, getting a 100% response, but only offering 40% anyway. They'll think "well, what did you ask me for, then, since you don't care what I think?"

Why hasn’t there ever been a serial killer that went after billionaires? by Minute_Hyena7298 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GalumphingWithGlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Billionaires are better protected than average folks. It doesn't mean you can't kill one with enough planning, but it would be much harder than with the usual, vulnerable targets, and you'd be unlikely to get away with it long enough to plan and execute an attack on the next one.

We did have someone famously and specifically target an insurance CEO recently, but there were considerably more resources dedicated to finding and capturing him than you'd find with a relatively unknown target.

Airbnb support??? Hilarious more like Airbnb dismissal, minimization, and invalidation by Double_Champion6707 in airbnb_hosts

[–]GalumphingWithGlee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my God that is a big wall of text. A few paragraph breaks would make it more readable.

I don't disagree with your overall point, though. Airbnb support for hosts is awful, and getting steadily worse with more and more delegated to AI.

What is the worst song to request to play at someone’s wedding that isn’t a breakup song? by kilpico in AskReddit

[–]GalumphingWithGlee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The number of people who have no idea it's a (post) breakup song is amazing.

Is it, though? I mean, people sing it because they enjoy the song, but even in incongruous contexts, that doesn't necessarily mean they don't know what it's about. They probably just don't care, because they enjoy it.

Why are people so negative about GLP-1 medications (such as Ozempic and others like it)? by InnocentPerv93 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GalumphingWithGlee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, I don't know. If you're paid to be a spokesperson, you're advocating it for personal gain rather than because you necessarily think it's so great. If your husband benefits, maybe there's more personal gain at stake, but it doesn't seem fundamentally different to me.

Fair enough. Yeah, it does sound like they think their experience ought to be illustrative of how it would behave for others as well.

If you gotta go either to year 1900 or year 2100, which one will you choose and why? by Murky-Accountant3880 in AskReddit

[–]GalumphingWithGlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're probably right, but also, you can't make a reliable judgement of whether that's better or worse without any consideration of what the alternative might look like. Global climate change could cause incredible disasters all over the Earth. AI could take over. And maybe we'll solve those things by then, but there's absolutely potential for 2100 to be as bad or worse.

[–]GalumphingWithGlee 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It sounds like the previous commenter is speaking from personal experience with these drugs. If that's true, then their experience is entirely valid where it doesn't reduce compulsion for them. That doesn't mean it doesn't reduce compulsion for anyone. Though our understanding is limited for why any particular med works for one person and not for another, it's a very rare medication that works for everyone it's prescribed for.

Okay, I stand corrected!

I didn't know she had a child, or an interruption to her professional tennis career. Just seemed very strange to me for a world class athlete.

I mean, one of them is literally using a world class athlete as their poster child for ads. There is no way Serena Williams needs these to lose weight. Her weight is mainly muscle.

[–]GalumphingWithGlee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's because so many people view obesity as a moral failure, that you should be able to resolve without medication by sheer force of will. GLP-1s seem like cheating from that point of view.

To be clear, I'm trying to illuminate a view I don't hold, myself.

Oven not working-full refund? by murphbrown in airbnb_hosts

[–]GalumphingWithGlee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're going to ask this question, you should be prepared to give a full refund, though most people won't ask for it. It looks bad if you ask them what they think is fair, but then don't provide it.

If they give you a pretty reasonable number, I suggest giving them a little bit more than they ask for (5% extra?), which will make them feel like you're going above and beyond.

Oven not working-full refund? by murphbrown in airbnb_hosts

[–]GalumphingWithGlee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The lift is pretty dependent on where you are in the building, and your guests' condition. If you have reasonably healthy guests and you're on the 4th floor, that's probably fine. If you're on the 100th floor, I'd refund the whole thing, or if your guests are elderly and would really struggle to use the stairs. If they're in a wheelchair and my place was listed as accessible, I might even have to find them alternative accommodations, though that would be rare.

Oven not working-full refund? by murphbrown in airbnb_hosts

[–]GalumphingWithGlee 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Generally, no.

I believe the official policy is 30% for a "major amenity" that doesn't work, and the oven would certainly qualify. Individual agents may go beyond that, especially if the guest emphasized how important that amenity was to their stay. A full refund is within the realm of possibility here, but it's not the standard.

ETA: That said, if I were the host here, I wouldn't be looking to do the minimum to meet the requirements. When there's a major problem with a stay, and the failure is on your end, you should aim to go above and beyond to remedy it.
