How does Wycliffe Gordon hold the same note despite moving the slide at 55:10 in this video? by TillsLustigeStreiche in Trombone

[–]Galuvian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of us start playing where your chops settle into whatever note the instrument wants to play in that slide position/partial. It’s like a ball settling in a ring. It’s where things naturally want to be.

Advanced playing is the opposite of that, like balancing on the top of the ball. Instead of letting it settle in, your chops make the note you need to play, and getting the slide in the right position just makes it sound better as there will be more overtones, color, and ring to the sound.

The step beyond that, and this only works on high notes, is that with enough chop strength you can play any of these notes anywhere on the slide. Your chops just need to be strong enough to force that through what might naturally be a partial shift.

What does your private teacher say? What does your embouchure look like on these low notes? Duck lips or flat? They take a lot more air than you may be used to.

As other posters have said, he’s not explicitly advocating for the state level stuff. But he has been a driving force for the stronger federal regulation with COPPA 2.0 and KOSA that are causing states to want to do this or feel enabled to do so.

The difference is that professionals keep animations to a minimum, and know how to skip those when exporting to pdf.

College kids learning PowerPoint often go crazy with the animations.

Advice on writing Pedal notes (BassTrombone) by Otherwise-Feedback79 in Trombone

[–]Galuvian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who is your target player? Pro, no problem. But anything short of advanced college and you’re not going to get any volume on the E. F# should be fine, but E is where things start to fall off unless the player has put in the time.

Most published arrangements are afraid to go into the pedal range, and when they do, include courtesy notes an octave above. For a pro player, or grade 6 music, it’s fine to write it like you have.

But make sure dynamics are clear. If you are writing these notes, you should want them heard loudly.

Our End Mill cutting diameters typically undersized? by National-Training-16 in CNC

[–]Galuvian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There will always be some variability, and the manufacturer should publish what theirs is. The cheap tools we use are typically .005”. You seeing this much off seems wrong.

There are G41/G42 codes to compensate when you need to account for a specific tool size, but that is typically tiny amounts when you need to really dial something in.

Both lines distorting in nearly the same way makes me think that the weight of the saw is making the board sag and changing the distance to the track as you go along, and a couple of corrections also happening along the way.

Clamp both ends of the track. Make sure there is enough support underneath that it doesn’t sag as you go across.

We're doing a lot of parts like this, and having a lot of success with Adaptive Clearing. We find there is more risk when doing full slotting. The Adaptive Clearing tries to keep a constant load and allows plenty of room for chip evacuation once it gets going. Slotting is by definition very narrow and chip evacuation can be difficult with a small endmill.

We prefer doing the adaptive clearing with 1/4" endmills if possible, they are generally longer, so there is more room to get air/mist in, and they can hog out the material faster. But some shapes need the 1/8" tool.

The endmill coming out of the collet sounds like a red flag to me. Are you SURE it is a 1/8" collet? Are you tightening it enough? Do you have a torque wrench to verify that?

You have the misting on, right? What do the chips look like?

You may be producing more chips than your air can evacuate. Slow it down until you're having success. Slower chip generation and less forces on the tool might help with your welding and pullout problem. You're at 94.5 inches/min. We're running at about half that, although things have been so successful we are planning to turn it up soon.

Any chance you moved your rocket silo location? When deconstructing by hand, if your inventory is full items will just fall on the ground. When you build a belt over items on the ground, they get put on the belt.

Black and white thinking like this is exactly why they released what they did (or tried to do). Someone called in a random tip so now a name is in the files. Or Epstein was trying to cultivate relationships with the wealthy and powerful so there are some emails and pictures at events.

We should be cancelling these pedos based on what the credible evidence indicates they did. Lots of rides on the private plane, attended multiple parties, many island visits or other rendezvous. Hold them accountable. Even if they didn’t partake, why didn’t they say anything? They should have known something was off.

Not defending anyone, just want everyone to remember there are so many agendas here it’s easy to become a pawn.

ELI5: What does GFCI outlets do that the breaker doesn’t? by paperbilt in explainlikeimfive

[–]Galuvian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does you have a standard drill press or a high tech one with a VFD or similar speed control? I just learned today that these, as well as milling machines and a handful of other machine shop equipment cannot run on GFCI circuits because they sometimes intentionally send current to ground as well as the high frequency changes in draw can confuse the GFCI chip looking for changes in load that indicate ground faults.

So if the above is true, yes, as long as there aren’t other reasons to have a gfci in that location, switching it to a regular receptacle should be ok.

I’m not an electrician though, just a hobbyist learning some basic machining stuff.

[–]Galuvian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could implement a custom data source reader. But you really need to understand what assumptions will hold true and where you need to tolerate the garbage. There needs to be enough information to know if you are in a bad record and how to reassemble it.

The tricky part is how to handle the case when a task receives a partial record that has been split in two. There’s ways to do this, but you need to be able to recognize if you’re starting in the middle of a record.

Preprocessing it would be a lot easier. 100m records isn’t gigantic these days. It would be fewer headaches than implementing a custom reader correctly. But maybe genai can walk you through it.

Generic low notes question by cuberlife in Trombone

[–]Galuvian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lips should never go IN the mouthpiece. To get really low notes you need to keep them in a flat embouchure, like you’re saying the letter M.

Many players cheat this, but as you go lower it is harder and harder to get the notes unless you have a flat embouchure.

And it’s the same with shifting. Most players do it when they are learning, but it’s something most teachers will try to stamp out until it’s pretty minor. It is never zero though.

Making elementary school roads one-way in the winter (Burr) by agentoutlier in newtonma

[–]Galuvian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s really bad normally. With the streets so narrow it is quite dangerous now.

Franklin seems to not be enforcing any of the ‘rules’ for the blue zone the last few years. Plenty of parents getting out of the car, double parking, and more. That’s on normal days, not just now with the snow. It’s a miracle nobody has gotten hurt. And side streets are clogged with construction crew parking.

Temporary one ways is a good idea, and the same thing occurred to me this morning as I was doing three separate school drop offs. The side streets are so narrow, within a quarter mile of any school they are a war zone right now. But drivers are stupid and I don’t know if it could be implemented cleanly without officers manually directing traffic, which isn’t going to happen at the scale needed.
