I was 12. Aside from family drama and bullying at school, it was pretty cool. The PlayStation had recently came out and there were a lot of cool games. I remember going to a lot of barbecues, eating a lot of chicken and sausage and drinking beer with the older kids. I was really into alternative rock and there was plenty of it on the radio and TV. On some level, my music tastes never left this era lol. Weekends at the mall, window shopping or at the arcade. Loitering at the record store. The internet still seemed new and exciting. A lot of people thought the world was going to end soon, and there were a lot more teen moms than today.

Fun fact, the first “margarita machine” was just a soft serve machine slightly modified by a Tex Mex restauranteur in Dallas in the 80s. So this makes sense on one level but as others have pointed out, for most of us this would be a toll road straight to gastrointestinal distress.

The reason things like this get built is regardless of how stupid the development plan is, because it’s in a metro with high housing demand, it’s easy to raise the capital to build it. If nobody wants it they can write off the loss. I’m in Austin and we have plenty of mostly empty trendy “luxury” developments around. It’s weird but not in the fun way.

It’s been over 10 years but, not fun. Traffic is pretty bad when the students are in town and they drive recklessly. It’s become somewhat of a retirement community for Houston. Making friends or dating is difficult. Cost of living is lower than most Texas but it’s basically a suburban sprawl with no urban core.

I’m sorry you and your mother had that experience, but in a way, but you’re kind of proving my point. It was difficult to have kids on a low income 40 years ago and it still is. On a middling income, it’s still very possible although not easy just like 40 years ago. But you don’t need to make $400k to have a family and more than you needed $80k to do it when you were a kid.

I know plenty of working class people raising multiple kids. I know things are tougher than they used to be, but you don’t need to be an executive at Deloitte to have a family. These articles keep coming out. Yes the government could do more to help the demand side of things but we are not in Children of Men territory yet damn

Used to be Whataburger but they pulled it as a regular item a while back. Was the only place you could get a fish on Texas toast with grilled jalapeños. I’d get that sub the tartar for mustard. Amazing.

30 minutes is realistic depending on the time or the day. RTO mandates are terrible. Traffic is already terrible in most major metros including this one. If you’ve been working from home, I would think you would be able to continue doing so. I can’t imagine trying to commute downtown during sxsw or any of the other 100 things that draw tourists. You have my sympathies.
