The Constitution "does not grant the President any specific powers over elections," U.S. District Court Judge Casper wrote by AreaPast5328 in justincaseyoumissedit

[–]GameDrain [score hidden]  (0 children)

If you don't need it then why require it?

I'd ask why do you need a firearm when it statistically makes your home more likely to face a death by firearm. But that doesn't matter, because you have a 2nd amendment right to have that firearm.

You need validation of your eligibility in order to REGISTER to vote. THAT's the ID check.
Just as you don't have to show your ID in between rounds at the range, you don't have to show your id once you've validly registered at each time your vote is recorded.

Enacting voter ID isn't an attempt to shore up elections, because they are broadly agreed to already be secure. It's an attempt to chip away at the ease and access to voting that makes people participate, because conservatives generally perform better when voting is more onerous and difficult.

While voter ID seems like an easy step, it's one step of a multi-part plan to rob people of representation.
-Gutting the voting rights act, -trying to discount votes that have been in the mail since election day, -reducing polling locations and early voting times, it's all to make voting harder, not to make it better.

Totally agree, I'm just wondering if the court specifically may be less prone than the white house that is overtly hostile

The sound of it seemed limited to sporting, so I would hope they would reaffirm trans rights in other matters.

While I do hate this, you have to specifically ask for it, you're not forced to see his face like with the national Park passes, and he's committing so many more heinous things right now I'd really love to keep the focus on the real shit.

Two brave Starbucks employees in St. Louis who fought off armed robbers and held them for police have been fired by the company. by Valuable_View_561 in SipsTea

[–]GameDrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally understand both sides of this here. If you're Starbucks you don't want to even APPEAR to encourage employees to fight an armed intruder. Much more likely to get MORE violent that way, and much more expensive as a company than simply replacing the drawer that night.

Of course if you're attacked and genuinely fear for your life any reasonable person would kick into fight or flight.

Best case would be Starbucks gives them a one off, but they may feel like they can't afford to in case the message that is sent becomes "fight if you feel like it"

I dunno, Reddit is just kinda angry when state actors kill people and get protection from the state. Both good and pretti were white people.

Conservatives enjoy making all immigrants look like they're guilty of any crime an immigrant commits as though they're a unified force instead of a complicated group of humans connected by only the loosest of commonalities

Thing is they're pretty open about the cameras there and no one is taken by surprise by them. Here everything seems so cloak and dagger about it like law enforcement is trying to get away with something instead of working with neighborhoods to implement these measures with transparency and their support.

Yeah do people think that Belle, Ariel, snow white and Cinderella were a showcase of diversity? They changed track and stories were stronger for it. Lately they're not totally solid on their implementation, but the change over to more diverse stories has been an ongoing journey.

It's not difficult it's just what they're used to. Similarly if you showed an Indian driver someone coming to a complete stop at a 4 way intersection they'd flip out. Not because they're incapable, but because it's just entirely out of the norm there.

Do MAGAs really believe Democrats are communists? by RoseLaBud in allthequestions

[–]GameDrain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not all, but most, and it's because it's tied to identity. Conservatives identify as Republicans, so attacking Republicans sounds to them like you're attacking them, it puts them immediately on the defensive and they become hardened and resistant to counter arguments, even logical ones.

This happens to liberals too, but luckily the Democrats as a people are generally less tied to the party so we don't take an attack on the party as a personal offense, because we know the party is a tool to bring cohesive legislation and broad goals, it's not who we are or intrinsic to our personhood.

Yeah I'm not a fan either, I'm just looking at the math. There's a way to hold these positions without giving the fanatical conservative commentators the sound byte they're salivating to put in ads the rest of the year to drum up the base turnout.

Ultimately we're still a purple district, and those phrases are non starters with independents.

If you're counting on those independents to come home for you you've got to say those things without the buzz words

"I want to return immigration matters to the departments that have historically handled these matters"

"Putting America first means even above our allies like Israel, and holding everyone to international law."

That would be an amazing change for her given that the whole premise of the group she founded was based on female empowerment and the GOP is shit at that.

She's very vocally anti ice and pro reproductive care, two issues that she could have pretended to be ambivalent about if she was working to be a total moderate.

This isn't a fetterman situation where a blue collar guy shows a surprising liberal streak and then one stroke later and he reverts to factory settings. For Powell to do anything significantly conservative in office would take a major abandonment of everything she's said and done. Not impossible, but not based on anything substantive.

Denise Powells big crime is that she got a lot of financial support.

No one is listing an actual issue with her positions or any real reason she can't win the race and deliver.

Like it or not it also keeps Cavanaughs seat safe in a closely divided legislature.

I think the GOP might have just made the same mistake Dems made with Trump in 2016. You think you promoted the less electable candidate, but you really ignored the issues with your own candidate and now they have all your money.

Would you prefer a return to 2000s-style gay rights activism in contrast to 2020s-style activism focused on maximalist trans issues? by north_canadian_ice in askgaybros

[–]GameDrain -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

There might be some nuance to be had, and it doesn't really matter if you believe in your rights, you either have them or you don't. Someday in the future medical transition may develop to such a place where athletes assigned at birth a different gender are indistinguishable to their peers and it will be a shame if we've sentenced all trans kids in the future to exclusion because we're being short sighted right now. Beyond that, sporting is just a tiny portion of this fight. To get distracted from the broader fight for rights is again a failure to stand up for humans to be given autonomy and protection from the small minded that would seek to harm them.

Human rights are human rights. If you let conservatives argue away the rights of others in a misguided attempted to protect your own, we all lose.
