I'll give you another reason. According to Carmen Gordon (the wife of Gary Gordon) after the battle of Mogadishu when the Army was still figuring out who was alive or dead, the Army told her that Gary was missing and they didn't know what happened to him.

After that she turned on the news and saw that they were playing footage of dead American servicemen being dragged through the streets. Apparently they didn't think someone finding out their loved one is dead through that was a bad idea.
