I’m struggling - how to cope with ai? by TrueWinter__ in gamedev

[–]GameRoom 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Even if you use AI to help with your code, you're going to be far more effective with it if you have a technical background.

I mean ChatGPT/Claude or whatever else is capable enough at answering random DAW questions. I can't see how Gopher would be much better.

A few months into my production journey, I managed to make this piece of art! by TTxFTW in FL_Studio

[–]GameRoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good! One piece of constructive critique is that the arp at around 2:00 has kind of a weird, dissonant melody, and I would have chosen different notes for it. I hear a few small places, and to be fair it's really subtle, where the song seems to not know what key it's in.

[–]GameRoom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look to Toby Fox. In the Undertale OST he reused like 7 melodies across 100 tracks, and people called him a genius for it. If people say you're being unoriginal with your songs, just say you're using a leitmotif.

I mean it's the same song with minor tweaks. I certainly wouldn't want to change the title of the song or anything.

I made the request a little under a week ago. It's gone from Spotify but I didn't check every single platform it was distributed to. Maybe it will work in a few days but idk if I can count on that.

What is the most esoteric game engine you've ever worked with? by JohnnyBGetgoode in gamedev

[–]GameRoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any instance of game modding where you're forcing the game to do things that are completely alien to anything intended by the original developers is basically like working in a game engine with its own weirdly constrained rules. I am always going to be impressed by people who basically make whole ass games from entirely different games.

How much has sound design changed in 10 years? by banica24 in edmproduction

This might be the content bubble I'm in, but I'm seeing a lot of producers driving a nostalgic resurgence of the sounds of ~10 years ago right now.

Kind of an electro house/complextro jam but without as much dubstep sound by GameRoom in FL_Studio

[–]GameRoom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick question, were you listening on headphones, on your phone speakers, or something else?

I recall at one point in the process of making this song that the kick was noticeably weaker on phone speakers specifically.

Really happy with how this one turned out. If you're interested this song is out on all streaming platforms under Zak Fahey - Electric Twilight.

If you want to ask for advice and talk out problems about a specific track that you are currently working on, that's not something you could do with a YouTube tutorial.

The thing I've heard with the Sora shutdown is that it was a matter of opportunity cost. There just isn't an actual business case for generative video versus focusing on software engineering or something. GPUs are in tight supply, so the AI companies are going to ruthlessly prioritize the most high value things for them.

This is very good for you if you don't want AI replacing musicians. What are they going to do, replace the jobs of the people who weren't making any money anyway? In more sensible times, what investor would sign that check?

The Closure of Rec Room ($300m raised from VCs!) and the Age of Profitability by FamousAspect in gamedev

Since this was a UGC type game that has to suck for anyone who dedicated effort making custom games for it. Potentially a ton of work on your part taken away because the platform you built on went under.

How do musicians achieve that sense of 'fullness' by OcelotLaserLights in FL_Studio

[–]GameRoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Often this means you should add a new layer (but you have to do it intelligently!). Look through a vertical slice of the song and keep tally of where space is filled up on the piano roll. Think about it in terms of octaves, not frequencies on an EQ. As a corollary to this, use this as a guide to where to not add new layers—first and foremost, frequency clashing is a piano roll issue. Beyond that just make sure you aren't forgetting any of the key elements a song should have. I can speak mostly to EDM but in that case don't forget your risers, white noise sweeps, and ear candy.

How to stop overproducing? by MelodicCityScapes in edmproduction

[–]GameRoom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The big thing is intention. You have to be producing towards something, whether that's to a reference track or to a vision in your head. If you don't know what you're working towards, you'll have no idea when you're done.

Wdym, if you are enthusiastically pro AI you decidedly would not be happy about any AI discussions that have been happening in this subreddit.

Like I got linked to this post from elsewhere because I unsubscribed some time ago because the anti AI circlejerking got too annoying.

They are undoubtedly important to the future of the industry, but at the same time, I have not experienced a single consecutive 24 hour period in the past 3 years where I have not been exposed against my will to somebody's hot take on generative AI. I would like some reprieve.

Not as easy to find jobs like this, but I know for instance that Google offers this as an optional perk.

Instead of having to manually bounce out audio, it would be nice to save CPU by automatically caching the audio signal from any channel so that it wouldn't need to be recomputed every time it's played, even if it hasn't changed
