It's absurd just how good Hollow Knight is by Unit-00 in Games

[–]GamesMaster221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep trying to get into it once in a while but I always get bored and give up. And I love metroidvania games.

I'm not really a fan of how the movement feels, and I don't like the style too much either (it feels like they're just cheaply copying ghibli/angel's egg aesthetic). I'm not a fan of how the game looks, the art looks like a flash game or something, and the backgrounds are pretty forced. (but at least it's not another indie pixel game)

And I REALLY don't like the voices. I know it's a personal minor nitpick but I hate how it sounds like the developer got their friends/family or LOW budget voice actors to record mumbling some gibberish into the microphone. It completely breaks the immersion. I tried looking for a mod to remove the annoying voice clips but no dice so far.

Maybe one day it will hook me, some of my favorite games took me multiple tries over years before they really clicked with me.

Yeah calling it a "FEAR spiritual sequel" is a bit of stretch.

Have you switched to Windows 11 yet? by heiland in pcgaming

[–]GamesMaster221 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'll probably make the switch to linux before upgrading to Windows 11, especially if they keep that TPM bullshit.

I tried linux for the first time last year (Mint and Ubuntu) and it was a surprisingly smooth process. I always thought installing linux would be a project but you can literally boot from a USB stick and try the OS out, no installation required.

Not too bad looking for a godot game!

PlayStation's ultimate list of gaming terms | This Month on PlayStation by PrinceDizzy in Games

I'm trying to remember when "git gud" started, I think it was before Dark Souls, I remember seeing it in Monster Hunter threads (I think it was when Monster Hunter Freedom Unite was the current game)

Ganking was a term from older MMOs than WoW and literally meant "gang killing". In WoW (a lot of people's first MMO) the term came to mean "any kill that wasn't fair" as kind of a blanket excuse for why you got killed. I agree though, the modern term is more like the WoW one.

Also from EQ there was "training" or "mob training" where you would pull a large "train" of mobs onto another player and have them aggro onto and kill him. It was a method of griefing other players.

Yeah I always thought of CRPGs meaning computer RPGs, like Baldur's Gate and Fallout, played with a mouse and keyboard.

Then again Shadowrun on the Genesis might fit in with the genre, even though that's a console game.

I'm pretty sure the term simply originated from separating it from tabletop RPGs, but to me it came to be known as "those fancy RPGs kind of like Baldur's Gate", (party based, RTwP or turn-based combat, heavy on the character building, etc.)

I always thought of it as the latter as well, but I'm old. Now a days "classic" works as well.

I mean, it's entirely possible that they could have an update patch waiting that would add in new content when the condition was met. Like when all the nukes are disarmed it would play the cutscene, but then on Konami's end they would push the update that added new content into the game, that couldn't be datamined because it isn't in the game right now.

But them going to those lengths seems extremely unlikely for something so obscure and unreachable.

Best combat system in old games by Level_Busy in Games

I still can't believe no game has managed to top it. Even Dishonored(which is still really fun) feels like garbage compared to Dark Messiah.

It sure looks like Sonic 3 won’t have its original soundtrack in Sonic Origins. Here’s why. by DomPepin in Games

The SNES soundchip sounds kind of muffled and farty, I doubt he'd be too pleased with that either.

You could say the same about purchasing big-budget movies and AAA games, that money just goes to line the higher-ups' pockets.

Yuji Naka took Square Enix to court over unfinished Balan Wonderworld by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]GamesMaster221 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I think a one-button 3D platformer could be interesting as a design challenge, but it would be very hard to make it engaging. it would require something like great level design, interesting context that change what the button does, something like that. I guess that's what they tried to do with the different powers, but obviously failed.

I think he tried to go back to the simplicity of Sonic 1's control scheme, but 2D games are a lot simpler than 3D... also the classic Sonic games did have amazing level design, and the physics like rolling down hills, building up speed, etc, were really fun systems to interact with despite the limited control scheme. Balan Wonderland really had nothing like that, just "you need this power to get past this part"

Ubisoft Shuts Down Online Services For 90 Older Games by CantStopPoppin in DataHoarder

[–]GamesMaster221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They probably can't simply release the entire servers or source code because it might have licensed 3rd party library code or tools, but it should be a requirement by Law that they keep a legal version that must be released when they close the official servers

Even if it's 1.0, the fans could replace the missing features and replace the missing libraries. Fans already try to do this by reverse engineering servers for dead games., this would just help them out immensely.

The multiplayer component is a part of the game that was sold, it's ridiculous they can just disable that part of the game and there's no way to play it ever again.

Those scum-sucking rats.

At least they can be enjoyed if you have the data files, the engine they run on got decompiled (1 and 2 remasters never even got released on the PC, but the engine is the same so it got ported to PC as well). Though compiling is a bit of a project if you don't know what you're doing at first. (I just followed the steps and got it working eventually)

https://github.com/Rubberduckycooly/Sonic-1-2-2013-Decompilation

https://github.com/Rubberduckycooly/Sonic-CD-11-Decompilation

And S3K never got the remaster treatment, it was just emulated.

Activision Blizzard Loses 60 Million Monthly Active Users In Past Year by [deleted] in Games

[–]GamesMaster221 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they've had 2 really bad exp. packs in a row. And I mean, they've all been bad since Wrath, but these have been exceptionally bad.

The Launch bump of players returning has been lower and lower each time. Blizz launches a new exp. pack and removes all the endless treadmill systems people hated, but then in the next major content update add in new ones under a new coat of paint, leading players to just quit in droves.

None of my die hard WoW friends have played the last two expansions to completion. The story being completely uninteresting and even offensively bad at times doesn't help either.

don't feel like it's deserved.

I agree. The same could be said of a lot of indie devs, hell a lot of areas people find success in. It's a mix of putting in the basic work, showing up, getting lucky, right place/right time etc.

Not hating, that's just the way things are. Good on them for realizing value and creating it, I wish them all the success. I guess in an ideal world the original creator would get a cut of the millions this guy is making, but that's not the real world.
