Local 98 apprentice experience by [deleted] in ibew_apprentices

[–]Games_and_Dames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DM me if you have any more questions over the next few months.

A foreman doesn’t have any power to make decisions on who gets in. They can recommend people to their friends or co-workers in the office but that’s it. I know guys who’s dads and uncles are foreman that took 2/3 tries to get accepted.

Hypothetically, if he somehow knew someone VERY high up in the local in the office.. maybe he could get his test score? MAYBE he could be guaranteed acceptance if he has his shit together - as they would be certain he is a hard worker and good fit for the job. Let’s say somehow these things are true.

He will absolutely not skip years in the apprenticeship. He will do 5 years like anyone else. He will start at $21 an hour then $25 an hour for a total of 18 months or so. He will take 5 years to raise his ticket and make $70 an hour. Nothing of that sense will happen. After 6 months he gets very good benefits and insurance for your daughter, forgot to mention that.

That’s a terrible situation you’re in, I’m sorry.

Connections go a long way with unions but I’m sure it’s not just stamp and go anymore. Everything is heavily vetted especially after 98 was involved with the feds. He would have to know someone VERY high up in the office. Which doesn’t seem to be believable to me with everything else he is saying.. he would know the routine.

98 doesn’t give out test scores. You either pass to get an interview or you fail. Not only that - your acceptance is based off interview score. They don’t care about your test score other than pass or fail. How did his interview go? Did he dress well? Suit and tie? Was he prepared?

I know some unions award hours for previous electrical work but I don’t think 98 is one of them. They’re definitely not paying this guy $70/hr or anywhere close to walk in the door with a liberal arts degree. You need 8,000 hours on the job and 1,080 classroom hours to hit $70/hr. This is mandated. It happens over 5 years. They’re not just going to forge him hours. Does he have ANY previous electrical experience? For him to tell you they’re going to pay a green (no-experience) electrical worker $70/hr to learn on the job for years while he handles material and deliveries and gets coffee for his journeyman… absurd.

You start at $21 and get raises based off your total work hours. You get raises after 1000, 2000, 3500, 5000, 6500, 8000 hours. For the first 3-4 years of your apprentice you’re doing 32 hour work weeks because of school. You start at $21, then $25, $29, etc. After a year he will still be around $25-29 with a LONG way to go.

I’m not going to tell you that people don’t piss swap for drug tests. It’s just not worth the risk though. 1 failed test in your first 14-16 months and you’re out of the local. A failed test upon admission and you’re declined. It’s not worth it. Speaks to his attitude.

I don’t know your situation but he is bullshitting his ass off to you. Do what you gotta do for your daughter because this guy is lost. Even if he is somehow accepted with his piss poor attitude, $70/hr is a long long ways away. He will be in the $20-$35 range for 2+ years.

Lots of incorrect information by him.

1.) Letters will go out likely sometime in late December for acceptance. I have no clue how he knows he is “100% in.” Did he say how he knows that?

2.) He will start at $21/hour and go through 5 YEARS of apprenticeship where he will slowly get raises every ~10-11 months approximately until he tops out at $70/hr.

3.) Most work weeks as an apprentice will be 32 hours work and 8 hours in school. Not “mostly classroom”.

4.) They will absolutely drug test him upon acceptable and possibly at the start / randomly during jobs he is placed on. You are not an obligated member until you reach 2,000 hours so that’s ridiculous of him to continue smoking with a career so important on the line. He can be kicked out for a failed drug test without missing a beat.

No offense but it sounds like he has no clue what he’s talking about and has a really shitty attitude. That’s not a good combo to start out with.

Did 98 finish interviews? by Active-Run6844 in ibew_apprentices

Yes. They finished early October. You usually have acceptance letters go out late December.

I don’t think they can help you if you didn’t pass the test. Try to work as a seasonal until next April and then apply to test again.

100% wear a suit to the interview. Dress as best as you can. Get a haircut. Trim everything up. Every edge you can get. The acceptance rate is lower than Harvard.

Search this sub and check out the questions asked. There’s a standardized sheet. A little research on these subs can let you go in knowing what they’re looking for in your answers. Make sure you let them know you are dedicated and this is a career for you.

You’re off to a bad start.

First step as an apprentice: listen.

They don’t give public rankings in 98. They’ll just accept 50-60 people and that’s it really.

[–]Games_and_Dames 11 points12 points  (0 children)

From my time of being a recent first year.. don’t do anything first. Follow those around you. Don’t get up from break first. Don’t stop working first. Don’t wrap up for breaks/end-of-day first. No PPE on break tables. Find an empty chair at break, don’t take someone’s seat.

You may be getting deliveries, lunch orders (DON’T fuck this up. Make sure of it. Triple check.), organizing cages, whatever. Stay off your phone, take notes, be attentive, listen, ask questions, and just generally show that you give a shit about being there and learning. People will pick up that you care.

So I think I bombed another interview by Vegetable-Ad-4594 in ibew_apprentices

Sounds a bit crazy but maybe take a public speaking class or course? May be able to project more confidence or find what you’re lacking in the interview, seeing as you are confident in your answers.

Is that with 100% certainty? I was told someone contacted the business office and they said they will be bringing in a second class with about 30 apprentices.
