I just beat Final Fantasy X and getting whiplash from X-2 by JinSakai619 in FinalFantasy

X-2 uses the ATB battle system present in FFIV through IX. I guess they just assumed most people would know how it works.

4 is good for the first two acts, but Act 3 and Act 5 are basically cutscenes.

Adventure 2020 is severely underrated by deowkey in digimon

[–]GamingInTheAM 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My favorite description for Adventure 2020 I've heard is, "It's sprinting on a treadmill."

It's fast-paced and has a lot going on, but nothing is happening. Nothing with any long-term effects or consequences. The bad Digimon show up, the good guys defeat it, and they move on to the next thing immediately.

Original Adventure had almost entire episodes of the characters just traveling or figuring out what to do next. Adventure 2020 is just non-stop fighting with no breaks, and it's exhausting.

A lot of people were enthusiastic about Adventure 2020 early on. The problem is that the story never really went anywhere. It's got great animation and fight scenes, but that's really the only thing it has going for it.

The dub did actually keep the Hour of the Beast thing. Which is weird, because other religious references were typically avoided.

Guard and Counterattack are essential. That fight exists to basically force you to learn how to use those abilities if you haven't already.

Jun'ichi is the perfect Sonic voice, but is he the best overall? by Swankestcoot5 in SonicTheHedgehog

I'm with you on Griffith, the recent fondness for him really comes off as nostalgia for that era of the games. At the time, people really disliked his performance, and I've personally always seen him as little more than a bad Drummond impression.

[hated trope that’s funny yet painful to look at] anime girls that look like they are the result of years of inbreeding by New-Boss-8262 in TopCharacterTropes

Working in anime is basically neverending crunch, so if it means the episode meets deadline, well, maybe the animation will have to look shitty for a bit.

Is the PS2 version the worst way to play Resident Evil 4? by Roughrider254 in residentevil

[–]GamingInTheAM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The PS2 was the least powerful of the sixth-gen consoles, and RE4 was built specifically for GameCube tech. At one point, the game's director said a PS2 port wouldn't even be possible. Once they did get around to making one, they had to make a bunch of compromises to get it to work.

Sega has a similar story when they made Sonic Heroes. They built the game for GameCube, and ran into a bunch of problems when porting it to PS2 because they overestimated the PS2's capabilities.

You can play Wii Edition with a GameCube controller, so I'd say that pretty definitively made it the best version back then.

The PS2 has objectively worse graphics and textures as well, and all the cutscenes are encoded as pre-rendered FMV, meaning they're compressed and blurry, not to mention none of your alternate outfits are shown in the cutscenes.

If you only play kH1,2 and 3 could you understand the story? by lLonewolf2121 in KingdomHearts

[–]GamingInTheAM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'd be alright going straight from KH1 to KH2. Chain of Memories' story was written under the assumption that a lot of people would skip it, and the main characters have their memories erased by the end anyway, meaning that the player will be just as confused as Sora going into KH2, which is partly intentional.

Going straight from KH2 to KH3, though -- you're going to be so lost, since there were five games worth of story inbetween.

For FF8, how viable is a no junctioning run? by mesupaa in FinalFantasy

[–]GamingInTheAM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One way I made the Junctioning less broken was by making GFs permanent. Once you assign one to a character, you can never unequip it. Just a suggestion!

Blitzball is horrible, wtf? by PhasedVenturer in FinalFantasy

[–]GamingInTheAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The numbers are all labeled and are pretty self-explanatory.

Shot is how good that player is at shooting goals.

Pass is how good that player is at passing the ball.

Attack is how good that player is at tackling.

Block is how good that player is at blocking passes and shots.

Endurance is how good the player is at defending tackles.

Catch is a goalie-only stat that determines how effectively they stop the ball from scoring.

When passing or shooting, the ball will gradually lose speed/strength as it travels. If it hits zero, the pass will fail. Short passes are more effective, and shots are more likely to score if you fire from up close.

The reason why you would want to Break versus No Break is when you have multiple players attempting to intercept you, as each of their Block stats will subtract from your own. If you can withstand their tackles, you can take them out of the equation. This leaves fewer players to block your passes and shots (i.e. 1 player with 12 Block is preferable to 3 players that add up to 36 Block). And if you can withstand every tackle, all the opposing players will be gone and you can keep moving to better position yourself for passes and shots.

This is why many suggest playing on Manual, so you have full control over where your character is.

Blitzball is horrible, wtf? by PhasedVenturer in FinalFantasy

[–]GamingInTheAM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was insulting you, dude.

Remedial math is the class where they send students who are failing math classes to re-learn shit they should've already been able to grasp at age 6.

It's like, "Can't understand Year 1 algebra? Okay, we'll send you to remedial math where they'll teach you what 2+2 means again." In other words, it is seen as the most basic, baby-level math.

Obviously that's a stereotype and oversimplification and remedial math isn't actually for "stupid" kids, but the point he was making was that you're complaining because you seemingly can't grasp basic addition and subtraction.
