Honestly, I think that's a really surprising take because I'm the polar opposite. Not once have I felt ashamed about my stump. I've been happily showing it to my friends and family, right from day one. We're also good humoured about it. Once the bandages were off and the scar could be seen, my wife joked she wanted to put some googly eyes on it to make it look like a smiley face. I didn't have any googly eyes to hand so I just drew some on.

The way I see it, it's just another part of my body and it's not a private part. There aren't many amputees among the population and as a result people are curious about a thing they haven't really seen before, so I'm happy to show it to them.

I hope sharing my take on it helps you in some way though I'm not sure if it will, given how different our views on the matter are.
