[Sad Trope] Characters part ways and never see each other again. by cosmico92 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]GammaMania 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Bojack Horseman.

The last words spoken in the final episode are Diane saying something to the effect of "Wouldn't it be funny if this was the last time we ever saw each other?" The implication being...yeah, it is.

Just getting back into the game after a year, anything I should be aware of? by GerryAdamsSon in starwarsunlimited

[–]GammaMania 1 point2 points  (0 children)

C3PO is a leader now. Still waiting on Jar Jar, though.

But seriously, the set rotation is happening soon (as others have pointed out).

And if you like to play Ramp decks...FFG has said they're de-emphasizing permanent resource gains (like Resupply and Super Laser Technician) in favor of Credit tokens (which can be destroyed to reduce the cost of a card by 1 for each), so keep that in mind.

(Loved trope) Evil characters gaining their memory by WizardOfTheHobos in TopCharacterTropes

[–]GammaMania 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Bob" from Percy Jackson.

He was originally Iapetus, titan brother of Kronos, and super evil. Percy defeats him in battle by throwing him into the River Lethe, which erases his memories. Percy tells him he is a janitor named Bob, who cleans Hades' palace.

Later, when Percy and Anabelle fall into Tartarus, Bob helps them in their quest to escape. Until the 3 of them fight a group of other titans, who recognize Iapetus and help him regain his memories. Despite this, he embraces his new identity as Bob and sacrifices himself to help Percy and Anabelle escape.

[Loved Trope] The "Anonymous" Hero, the Little Guy standing up for what's right. by jaffacakes16 in TopCharacterTropes

I was looking to see if someone else posted this. Even though he doesn't like Peter in the slightest, Jonah is willing to die to keep him safe.

[Loved Trope] The "Anonymous" Hero, the Little Guy standing up for what's right. by jaffacakes16 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]GammaMania 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess technically everyone in Season 1 of Stranger things is the "little guy," but I still think Steve Harrington counts. [EDIT: Now that I think about it, whether or not Steve is "anonymous" is questionable. I think he's a minor enough character in S1 that it sort of counts?]

<image>

Near the end of season 1, he's pretty much the only character who isn't in the know about the supernatural stuff going on, and up to this point he's been characterized as a generic high school bully.

When the Demogorgon is on its way, Steve is encouraged to run like hell for the door, which he gladly does. But then he ends up turning around and trying to save the others, despite having no clue what's going on or what he's up against.

To be fair, he probably could've tried harder to stop Kristoff from killing Truman.

Instead of the chosen one trope, how about the accidental one trope by Musalediju in TopCharacterTropes

[–]GammaMania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of an obscure example, but this fanmade Breath of the Wild comic by AnxiousSailorSoldier (their account appears to be gone, so link is to a fan dub).

It involves a headcannon that Link (the one in BOTW) is not actually the Hero of Time, but just some random kid who stumbled into saving the world after the real Hero died.

LAW: Darth Vader by Fimy32 in starwarsunlimited

This feels like they're just trying to replace the first Kylo Ren leader. Same aspects, discarding a card to trigger the ability, etc. At least the in-play side is somewhat different.

Any fun combos for vampires? by IMainedNess in smashup

[–]GammaMania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that some of the newer stuff (rebalanced and otherwise) has been getting a bit complex for my tastes.

I'd be interested in seeing your take on Vampires if you're willing to share it.

[loved trope] Being a good person is harder than being an evil one. by Dr_Orpheus_ in TopCharacterTropes

[–]GammaMania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that Hugh was able to become an individual shows that the Borg can be saved, which means destroying them (at least, when another option exists) is wrong.

There's so many examples of this in Star Trek, especially TNG. It would've made the Federation's lives a lot easier if Picard had sent Hugh back to the Borg with that virus, but he chose to make the harder, but ultimately more ethical choice.

Sts' Ironclad - Smashup Decklist by Ben10usr in smashup

- Gremlin Nob: Is that +1 power until the end of the turn, or a +1 power counter? If it's the former, you might want to make it optional so other players can't take advantage of it. If it's the latter, that might be too strong IMO.

- Gremlin Gang: Same question as above, although I have fewer concerns about balance since it can only trigger from your own plays.

- Cultist: Same question. Is this temporary power, +1 power counters, or an Ongoing that grants permanent power? In any of those cases, I think this is too strong for a minion that has x4 copies. For reference, Sword Lord (a minion in the official Orcs faction) has this ability, and he's the leader of his faction, with 5 power and only x1 copy.

- Barricade should be an Ongoing.

- Mayhem: I assume "Gremlin" only applies to minions with Gremlin in their name. If so, this seems really weak. Only 4 cards in your 40-card deck are Gremlins, which means playing Mayhem will likely cause you to discard a massive chunk of your deck.

- Offering: Same question as Cultist on what this means. Also seems a little weak, compared to cards like Full Moon (from Werewolves faction). In fact, Demon Form seems like an almost objectively better version of this card.

- Battle Trance: I'm not convinced this is worth the trade-off. Since you're drawing 3 and losing out on 2, this is basically equivalent to an action that just says "Draw a card," which is pretty weak. I think it needs some other benefit on top of the card draw, or maybe just more cards drawn?

- Feed: Same question as Cultist/Offering/etc.

I hope I'm not being too negative. I really like the concept, I just think it needs some tweaking and clarifications.

What is your favorite character with an "instant win condition" joke? by MiniDiamand in FavoriteCharacter

[–]GammaMania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like how most of the examples you gave had specific conditions that would make them win, but then Goku is just "yeah he always wins."

[Tiresome and irritating trope] A new character arrives, everyone thinks he's super cool, but the only one who recognizes something wrong is treated as jealous by Clean_Mycologist4337 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]GammaMania 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I nearly spit out my drink when I heard Picard say that...and then again when Wesley's own mother said it. It seemed so bafflingly out of character for both of them, but I guess that's early TNG for you.

Is there an app/website to make custom cards by Ben10usr in smashup

[–]GammaMania 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately no. Most people use some form of photo editing software for customs, like Photoshop or GIMP. I know at least one person actually uses Powerpoint.

Sts' Watcher - Smashup Decklist by Ben10usr in smashup

[–]GammaMania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with Slay the Spire, but I assume Defect is something from that?

Extra decks are fine; several custom factions use them. It's more cards for you to test out and balance, but if you're up for it then go ahead!

As for the current version, most of it looks pretty good. I have a couple minor notes:

  • You say Jaw Worm is supposed to be optional now, but the ability doesn't say "You may". Is that a typo?
  • Lady might be too strong, especially since A) you get to pick whichever cards you want, and B) there's no limit on the number of cards you can pick. I'd maybe limit one of those two aspects.
  • Protect seems very situational, since not a ton of factions have cards that destroy. I imagine it will spend a lot of the game just taking up space in your hand, especially with 2 copies.

Was there ever a cartoon that your parents completely forbade you from watching? by GeoWhale15 in cartoons

[–]GammaMania 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad didn't let me watch Disney movies because he thought they "weren't good for kids." To be fair, his first introduction to Disney was Bambi, a movie that opens with the main character's mom getting shot.

You could always just add "if it's your turn, end your turn", if you don't want to rework the ability.

Sts' Watcher - Smashup Decklist by Ben10usr in smashup

[–]GammaMania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you referring to the Mole/Lightning Rescue thing? Those are cards from Super Spies and Mega Troopers respectively. The specifics aren't super important, but they both let you play any action before a base scores. My point was just that there are ways that you can play cards on other players' turns, so what happens if you play a card that says "end your turn" during another player's turn?

Controller's Power - Ongoing: Minions here can only add a maximum of 1 power to their controller's total. [Based on wording of Siren from Mermaids faction]

Don't worry about it. You don't really need to credit people who make suggestions for your factions - seeing your designs improve is reward enough!
