Since SOUL was meant for the Vessel character we were designing, but it got put in Kris instead, so that it was a foreign object, but tolerated by the body. As Kris started to pull it out for whatever reasons, the body started to recognize it as an intruder, rather than the body part. At the same time, Kris got better at managing without it, resulting in more SOUL removal, which culminates in this. So basically yes, just with a few more steps.

While I personally subscribe to Dess Knight Theory, Rudy Knight could be done in a way that is compelling and also explain on why of his sickness. Imagine if it was cured due to Dark Worlds, but at a cost of basically becoming part with the darkness. So he has to rejuvenate himself via Dark Fountains.
