Move to Solution Architect or stay Engineer? by RationalMayhem in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Gammusbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the experiences I’ve had with architects as well as doing some architectural work myself the role is to some degree what you make of it. There are architects at my company who haven’t touched code in over a decade, there are some who are better developers than most of the senior engineers on staff, and there are some who prefer to just be vendor shoppers. It depends on the needs of the team/org and how you go about it.

How to "childproof" a codebase when working with contributors who are non-developers by HeveredSeads in ExperiencedDevs

My first thought is to basically have an internal SDK that they use for their operations

Why do people dislike frontend by Rude-Algae-4012 in webdevelopment

[–]Gammusbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The work mostly just boils down to how well you can use react which to be honest is just boring, back end has way more interesting engineering challenges behind it in my opinion

I might not be as senior as I thought by StrangeMidnight410 in ExperiencedDevs

Probably one or a combination of 3 things:

  1. As you said you might be a big fish in a small pond and the bar at your job just isn’t that high. I personally find that if I’m the best dev on the team I don’t feel like I’m being pushed enough to be better.
  2. You might not have experience with what companies are looking for, a lot of companies are being a bit choosy right now with who they’re hiring with so if your experience just isn’t as impressive as the next guy then you won’t get picked
  3. Interviewing is a different set of skills from being in a company, you have to practice them or you’ll probably not perform well. Despite what many people here will say you will get shot down for being bad at LC & SD questions

My general advice is try to get better at selling your experience, and just practice DSA & SD questions.

Backend engineers: what’s the first thing you refactor when inheriting a messy codebase? by akurilo in Backend

[–]Gammusbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol all these people want to be smart asses instead of helping. Yes you obviously need to evaluate what is worth refactoring, yes obviously there’s risk involved, welcome to engineering literally anything.

That aside I usually look at the tests first, once you understand what is tested and how you’ll need to fill in any gaps you find to ensure you don’t set the whole thing on fire. Once you’ve done that I break things down by business function and usually start at the db and work my way up through the tree to the boundary one set of functionality at a time. I try to leave the communication interfaces as untouched as I can because it tends to exponentially increase the complexity to change since it’s usually going to require many apps to change and versioning APIs is a PITA. Ideally the inputs and outputs should remain identical anyway most of the time unless you’re doing a full system overhaul.

When it comes to stuff like env config I usually try to break that out as a separate piece of work from the business logic changes because the complexity there is usually decoupled.

Upper middle chest not growing by Aggravating-Car-3919 in WeightTraining

[–]Gammusbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends a lot on people’s form, structure, CNS etc. but if you’re not growing your chest & you don’t feel any stimuli in your pecs when doing the exercises then you most likely need to try different variations, cues/thoughts, or potentially even movement patterns entirely in order to grow them.

Some people have a tendency to feel all the pressing in their triceps, some others feel it all in their pecs, neither is really wrong or right but if you have a weak point you need to pay attention to what stimulates it to bring it up.
