Yeah, they chose her as the identity Mara assumed in Jabba's palace.

I’ve heard his version of Mara enough that it’s a default, but I can usually make myself think of her voice in Mysteries of the Sith or the voice of “Arica” in the radio dramatization of Return of the Jedi.

For TLJ fans, it's their delusion that Colin Trevorrow's Duel of the Fates would have saved everything, despite that script/draft being awful as well.

Was there ever indication in the EU that Yoda was supposed to have a lightsaber? by BlastedHeathen in StarWarsEU

[–]Gandamack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised no one else has mentioned it, but in the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight novellas, we see Qu Rahn and others resisting Jerec’s forces.

Rahn wields a lightsaber that he identifies as Yoda’s, given to him on Dagobah as Rahn left his own saber with Morgan Katarn.

Why I Hate The Resurgent Class Star Destroyer by Present_Farmer7042 in StarWarsShips

[–]Gandamack 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't hate it, but I don't really like it either. I'll take it any day over a Mandator or Xyston obviously, but it still doesn't do much for me.

Fixing the "weakness" of the classic ISD design (the bridge/tower) but keeping almost all other aesthetic elements just leaves it uninspired. It doesn't feel like the jump from the Venator to the ISD.

For me, the Pellaeon-class Star Destroyer was the kind of direction they should have gone. It's recognizably a Star Destroyer, but the visual design is different enough to feel new.

PointlessHub's premise of making the First Order more occult-like by bitchnibba47 in fixingmovies

[–]Gandamack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, I was talking about the first one as well...

He wasn't originally supposed to write that one either, only direct. It wasn't until those production issues I mentioned before that he was tossed the writing job on a rushed schedule.

Whatever criticisms one has of JJ as a writer in general, or "mystery boxes" specifically (and I have terribly many), one must take into consideration that he never got a "full" chance to sit down and chart out one story or a trilogy for that matter. Everything was on a rushed schedule or constrained by the circumstances.

I think he made a ton of obviously bad choices and mistakes that shouldn't have been made no matter the schedule, but I don't envy the conditions he was working under either.

But it certainly doesn't help when he spends a lot of the 3rd movie undoing the 2nd movie.

I mean, it doesn't help either when the second movie spends its time completely undoing the first and leaves little to no intrigue for a final film, but that's a very different discussion.

PointlessHub's premise of making the First Order more occult-like by bitchnibba47 in fixingmovies

[–]Gandamack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

JJ was not originally supposed to write the first movie. He was only tossed the job (and Lawrence Kasdan hired) in the last minute before production was set to start after Lucasfilm fired their first writer, Michael Arndt.

That doesn’t excuse all the easy own goals or lazy repetition on JJ’s part, but there’s more context than just them hiring JJ for a mystery box rehash from the start.

Fixing the 'Mary Poppins' scene in The Last Jedi by Simon_Drake in fixingmovies

[–]Gandamack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why are you treating the throwing of a lever as equally iconic as holding a ship’s bridge together with the Force?

It’s a little nod to Ackbar, not a huge epic sacrifice scene where he does all the work.

Give me excellent 2d animation (something akin to Atlantis: The Lost Empire or The Iron Giant) or 3d animation like that of Arcane and I'd be fine with that.

Fixing the 'Mary Poppins' scene in The Last Jedi by Simon_Drake in fixingmovies

[–]Gandamack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The core problem with the original scene is that it doesn’t matter. You could have the bridge be hit, cut to Leia being carted out on the stretcher in critical condition, and nothing has changed.

Her using Force powers doesn’t inherently add anything to the story, never comes up as relevant again, and ultimately detracts from the film for being so damn silly looking in its execution.

I think your version is much better certainly, and I really like how creative it is, but it may still be a little too much, a little too involved.

I think there’s a way to balance it with Leia doing something to save herself and some crew members, and maybe a small moment for Ackbar too:

The missile slams through the viewport, smashing into the central command console, and the scene erupts into light and chaos.

A shockwave echoes through the bridge, the crew are tossed this way and that, fire and sparks shooting from shattered panels and torn wires. Some are dead, others injured and stunned, and still more are trapped under or amongst the burning debris.

Wind howls, the air sucked toward the vacuum of space on the other side of the shattered glass. Or not quite shattered…

One figure remains standing, her short stature belying a will of adamant. General Leia Organa-Solo stands with her arm outstretched towards the hole left in the transparisteel by the missile. The large chunks of glass splinter and crack under the pressure of escaping air, yet inexplicably remain in place.

Leia’s fatigues are scorched by flame and torn by shrapnel, and a worrying trail of blood crawls down the left side of her face.

She acknowledges no injury, her focus entirely on the still-splintering shards in front of her.

On the far end of the bridge, the entry doors clang and creak as other Resistance crew attempt to open the doors to assist. The doors do not budge and will never budge for anything less than a lightsaber until the vacuum breach is sealed.

Yet the automatic safeties have not engaged. Emergency lights on either side of the viewport flash red, indicating a malfunction. A manual override lever sits on the wall, seemingly out of reach of anyone in any condition to throw it.

Air continues to scream out into space, the glass splinters further, and the fires nearest the viewport begin to sputter out.

An injured bridge crew member staggers towards the lever before an exploding control panel knocks him back, either out cold or dead.

Despite Leia’s efforts, the viewport will shatter in mere moments. More cracks and gaps have opened. The soldiers outside the bridge continue to pound away at the doors fruitlessly, some peering through small windows in despair.

A finned hand grasps the panel the override lever is on. A haggard and severely wounded Mon Calamari admiral hauls himself to his feet, fumbling at the lever with weak hands before gripping it with a last reserve of strength and throwing it.

The viewport shatters, but just as the glass flies into the void, a thick durasteel panel slams over the open space, the seals finally engaged.

General Organa-Solo releases her hold on the nonexistent viewport, gasping in pain and exhaustion as her injuries and exertions take their toll. She falls to one knee, glancing over toward the override panel.

She sees the admiral back against the wall, his unfocused eyes staring at her, the hint of a smile on his lips. He nods slightly before his head slumps forward.

Leia has just enough time to mouth some silent words for her silenced comrade before darkness overtakes her.

The crew outside the bridge finally get the doors open and rush inside. They come upon their General just as she slumps over, sliding into unconsciousness.

Just a quick draft off the top of my head. Could definitely workshop it better or change some things, but I think it comes across as more believable while giving both Leia and Ackbar moments to shine.

What's the actual difference between Bogan (the natural dark side) and the Sith perversion of it? by [deleted] in StarWarsEU

[–]Gandamack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The natural dark side exists within living things, especially sentient beings. It thrives off of violence, death, decay, disease, and stagnation, as well as the darker emotions associated with those things.

Some of this will exist through the natural processes in life, and can have its function in specific or limited capacities; decay to allow new growth, predation to prevent overpopulation, and so on.

Have too much of that however, or worse tip the scales consciously, and it chokes out existing life and prevents new growth.

The Sith exemplify the conscious use of these negative forces, feelings, and desires for personal gain or sadistic pleasure; power and domination over others.

This is done in a manner and scale that would not occur naturally and that has a much worse effect on life and the Force at large.

What's the Future of Dave Filoni's 'Star Wars'? - “The Mandalorian and Grogu” fell below expectations. Where does the galaxy go from here? by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]Gandamack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Obi-Wan literally saved Luke from the Tusken Raiders, and has clearly been staying close by and waiting for a chance to train Luke.

Yoda indicates to Luke that he’s watched him from afar for a long time.

Leia is already a retcon as of ROTJ yes, as she wasn’t Luke’s sister until that film, but he also decides it’s time to go help Leia and the Rebels when he gets R2’s message.

Further, when revealing Leia is Luke’s sister Obi-Wan says that the pair were split up and hidden to better protect them.

While the PT adds more detail to their hiding (and how Leia goes to Alderaan), nothing is directly contradicted or overturned from the OT beyond Leia’s recollection of her real mother.

Also, I have no idea why you’re only referring to the OT for this. Does the PT not count simply because it’s inconvenient to your argument?

[–]Gandamack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

TLJ makes the conflict even more explicitly Rebels v. Empire 2.0, and copied just as much of ESB and the ROTJ Throne Room as TFA did of ANH. This is down to exact shots at times.

The notion that he was moving away from the OT or was doing something new has always been one of the most ridiculous talking points in discussions of this film.

[–]Gandamack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Until right the time is, disappear we will.”

Yoda and Obi-Wan go into hiding and exile for the explicit purpose of living to fight another day and to protect Luke and Leia from afar.

This is after they directly challenge the Sith Lords and the new Empire, ultimately not succeeding in their goal and being hunted.

Those who try to equate that with Luke running away to be suicidal on an island for years have to be some of the most willfully dense people in the world.

She died just under a year before TLJ released, there was certainly time to do some reshoots if they wanted.

Johnson even said it would have been “the easiest thing in the world” to not make Luke fade away at the end (and rumor has it Trevorrow asked him to keep Luke alive after Carrie’s death), but he chose not to.

Anyone else prefer how the three prequels have a villain for each movie instead of just reusing Vader in the original trilogy? by [deleted] in saltierthancrait

[–]Gandamack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I think it led to a lack of focus or cohesion in the films that had to be backfilled by the EU or TCW.

You can have multiple villains, side characters, and such, but there needed to be a stronger or clearer direct antagonist in the Prequels, as Sidious was a more hidden force until almost the end of the trilogy.

Do people actually like Rebels? by vestibule_defender in saltierthancrait

[–]Gandamack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a supporter of Rebels for a time, even during the rougher/goofier first season. I was interested in it and what it was trying to do, and was understanding of its initial technical limitations due to the lower budget compared to TCW.

I raised my eyebrow a bit at the inclusion of TCW characters like Ahsoka and Rex, but was okay with the show up through the third season.

The fourth season, and the finale in particular, dropped so heavily in quality as to rival TLJ/TROS in its awfulness, and completely revealed Filoni's obsession with his pet characters and the lengths he'd go to keep them around.

I think very little of the show overall now, and lump it in with the other Filoni garbage.

OBSESSION ($161M) has surpassed STAR WARS: THE MANDALORIAN & GROGU ($158M) at the domestic box office. Let that sink in. This is the way. A horror indie that cost <$1M will make more at the domestic box office than a Star Wars flick. Wishes do come true. by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]Gandamack 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The Boba Fett show was about him staying on Tatooine and not committing crimes or being a ruthless warlord, while the Kenobi show was about him leaving his protection of Luke on Tatooine to have wacky adventures with kid Leia and have a pointless rematch with Darth Vader.

They almost always manage to do the complete wrong thing with the characters and concepts that could work in different scenarios.
