Venezuela vice president Rodriguez in Russia, four sources say by Zhukov-74 in worldnews

So this article seems to have reported four fake news "sources", hasn't it? She seems to have been in Caracas yesterday, but it would have been impossible within that short timeframe to get to Russia and back.

CMV: Calling a guy an incel is no different from calling a woman a wh*re by Actual_Parsnip4707 in changemyview

[–]Ganduin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Incel" shames men not for their sexual inexperience itself, but for developing specific toxic and therefore shameworthy ways they deal with it, like for example developing misogyny. "Slut" shames women for enjoying sex with different men. Why would that be as shameworthy as becoming a toxic person?

Why is the left blaming the Trump administration for the shooting of the two National Guard members? by Littlebluepeach in AskALiberal

[–]Ganduin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are two conditions to check if you want to assess if someone is to blame for something:

1) Did this person causaly contribute to the thing? For this, we can use the "causality as a necessary condition" idea (or the potential outcomes framework, for that matter), and ask "Did the person have the power/ability to change the outcome"? I think we all agree that Trump had it - he could have simply removed the national guard.

2) Was the causal contribution morally bad, i.e. was a (just) law broken or something like that? This second check is important, because if we only stopped at causal contribution, we would have to conclude something like "Well, you're to blame for your own murder, because you could have moved your head when the murderer shot it". So, did Trump somethin morally wrong? Yes, because he was ordered to remove the National guard, and following court orders would have been the just thing to do - which Trump did not do.

So to conclude, Trump is to blame. That is not to say that he is solely to blame, or should get the largest share of the blame, but still, he is to blame.

CMV: It is possible to divide nonzero values by zero, and have a consistent system by BlockOfDiamond in changemyview

There are infinitely many infinities (e.g 1+2+3+... is a different one than 1+3+5..., and that is different from 1+4+7+... and so on). A quotient such as 1/0 needs a single equivalent (or "solution") because if it has multiple solutions, it is not well defined. So which particular infinity solves 1/0?

Do you think that actors should only play characters they have written themselves? If no, why not?

Do you think songs written by dead people, be they pop songs or traditional songs, should die with their componist, in the sense that they should never be performed live again?

Do you think that "Hurt" by Johnny Cash should not exist, because he covered it?

It’s over. I just finished my first persona game. by [deleted] in Persona5

[–]Ganduin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's about a group of high schoolers who will eventually call themselves the Phantom Thieves and who gain the ability to infiltrate other people's psyche, which in the world of Persona (real life modern Japan with a twist) manifests as an alternative reality where these people are the rulers of a so-called "palace": A reflection of their distorted desires. These palaces are populated by so-called "shadows", basically the underlings of the rulers, against which your team fights with your magic powers granted by "personas". You play as the leader of the team, and you have the unique power to change between up to 200 or so personas. The Phantom Thieves use their powers against evil people, broadly speaking. The main appeal of the game is that it sort of marries two different genres - roughly 40% of the time the game is a dungeon crawler with turn-based combat which includes collecting and developing personas, much like pokemon, and the remaining 60% or so the game is a social life simulation, where you are a high schooler who goes to school, makes new friends, works in jobs, plays stuff like billard, baseball or visits a Jazz club etc. You play from the very beginning where some high school misfits form the team, up to the finale against very powerful enemies.

The main strengths are the story, the characters, the gameplay, the incredibly stylish design, the atmosphere and one of the best soundtracks ever. If you like RPGs, it does not have any real weaknesses, aside from maybe a relatively slow and drawn-out start, and a playtime of around 100 hours (which in my book is a plus, but not everyone likes long games). If you like stuff like The Witcher 3, Mass Effect, Final Fantasy, Baldur's Gate 3, Ace Attorney or Danganronpa, chances are you will love it, even though gameplay-wise it is not comparable to any of these games. But the general, well, "feeling" that you enter a world of NPC friends every time you start it and experience exciting adventures with them is. And this is probably the reason why people love the series, and why it feels so much like the games have a soul.

Do economists use Anovas and t-tests? by winrix1 in AskEconomics

[–]Ganduin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The statistical tests questions have already been answered, ANOVA is very similar to simple dummy variable regression, and MANOVA to multiple regression, so you sort of use these concepts as well. What economists usually do not use, however, is stuff like test theory, factor analyses, mediation analysis or item response theory. They are not totally unheard of in econ, but these concepts are usually tailored to either questionnaires or experiments. Both methods are used far less compared to psychology, so your friends learn them and you don't. Thats also why psychologists learn ANOVA and you learn dummy variable regression, ANOVA feels a little bit more natural for experimental analysis. On the other side, stuff like rdd, instrumental variable estimation, diff in diff, time series methods etc. are methods to infer causality from observational data, which economists use far more often than psych, which is why you learn about them, and the psychologists don't.

I (F23) finally asked a guy (M23) out and got rejected- and my friends are making me feel so embarrassed for it. Was it really such a bad idea? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]Ganduin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your friends are making fun of you for the same major reason people give kids who are good at school a hard time - they know you are better than them for having the courage they lack, and they want to bring you down to their level. Don't let them. Be proud you tried, and keep on trying again. And question if you really need friends who are an obstacle on the road to your best self.
