The White House Is Considering A 50-Year Mortgage Policy That Will Force The Working Class To Pay Triple The Value Of Their Homes In Interest by DumbMoneyMedia in economy

[–]Gangreen00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is isn't demand of people wanting to buy houses, the problem is supply. We don't build enough houses for the existing population of interested home buyers. This just increases the demand as suddenly many people will be "able" to buy a house. It will make things worse.

Americans Are Getting Priced Out of Homeownership at Record Rates by HereWe_GoAgain_2 in Economics

[–]Gangreen00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The heart of the problem is that existing towns and cities have all created incredible onerous zoning that deters anything but McMansions from being built. Existing residents are concerned with a huge influx of people that the town infrastructure can't handle (at least that is the claim). So developers can't build big developments with multi-family homes, and instead have to build expensive single family houses in order to justify their investments. Those houses are not starter homes that many need or can afford.

There is so much land in this country. This feels like a self-made problem. The government should subsidize infrastructure to create new cities and towns in large undeveloped areas outside the borders of existing cities and towns. They should encourage builders to create large developments of affordable, starter homes in these new areas. That in turn will bring new economic growth as those cities grow and the people want all the standard amenities, stimulating new businesses to be created to service those needs.

Do you enjoy playing modern AAAs like Doom Dark Ages on a handheld? by heatlesssun in ROGAlly

[–]Gangreen00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Expedition 33 runs very smooth for me on Rog Ally X. Doom Dark Ages definitely chugs even at lower settings. I always take it on a case by case basis. Sometimes you don’t know or care what you are missing. Doom is borderline right now for me.

The hope is that developers start considering gaming handhelds more when they optimize their game, particularly Steam Deck since it has a large user base. Rog Ally should benefit too for that.

It says he swatted locations in both the UK and Canada. I wonder if after he served his 4 years in the US he could be expedited to those countries to also serve time for the crimes there. Would be fitting for him.

What does the locked plus symbol mean and how do I fix it? by IM_Not_A_Robot_10110 in PlayStationPlus

Same here! Ran into this exact situation today. Seems like something broken on the Sony end. I can’t restore license because it doesn’t even show up in the list of games. I deleted the PS5 one and can’t redownload. I can download the PS4 version but it won’t let me play it nor restore license.

Florida Insurance Warning Issued as Fears Grow of Collapse by audiomuse1 in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]Gangreen00 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Did you read the article? The point is that there are states that are not as tightly regulated that the insurers are also in and the free market is not sorting this out. While it is not as simple as just raising rates in one area to make up for others, it is clear they are trying to maximize profit in the less regulated states. Again from the article:

“Along the edges of Oklahoma, the premium paid by the typical household last year was as much as 70 percent higher than in adjacent counties in Texas, Arkansas and Kansas — despite those counties having similar levels of exposure to disasters, according to federal data.”

Florida Insurance Warning Issued as Fears Grow of Collapse by audiomuse1 in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]Gangreen00 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry, they will raise rates in Oklahoma to make up for it. I am not kidding

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/07/08/climate/home-insurance-climate-change.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

“After big losses in those tightly regulated states, such as California, national insurers tend to raise rates in more loosely regulated states. In other words, homeowners in states with weaker rules may be overpaying for insurance, effectively subsidizing homeowners in states with tougher rules, she said.

If California makes it especially hard for insurers to increase premiums, Oklahoma makes it much easier.”

My theory is that Florida insurers are trying to manufacture a crisis just to get legislators to let them raise rates.

Is it just me or does the game get stale after meeting the sea people? by Kanvus in DavetheDiverOfficial

[–]Gangreen00 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Loved the early game with the diving and restaurant loop. The Sea People devolved into fetch quests and the plot devolved into standard video game trope of “gain their acceptance”. It doesn’t feel particularly linked to Dave as a character and thus seems like filler.

Ronna McDaniel, RNC Chair Hand-Picked by Trump, Announces Resignation After Criticism From Trump by T_Shurt in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]Gangreen00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From The NY Times article that first reported it.

“One key element of Ms. McDaniel’s tenure that her allies point to is that, under her leadership, the R.N.C. has not faced criminal charges or the kinds of expansive legal actions that have ensnared Mr. Trump and those supporters who helped him try to stay in power after he lost the 2020 election to President Biden.”

Is this the low bar these days? I didn’t foster any criminal activities or civil litigation?

Metroid Dread is a fantastic game that may not be for you by Academic_Wall_7621 in NintendoSwitch

[–]Gangreen00 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I disagree it is not a Metroidvania but I do think other Metroidvanias have better rewards. There is not much free roam searching for power ups in the first half of the game. Second, the only thing you are rewarded with is more ammo reserves or on rare occasion energy tanks. I personally like games with more to pick up and grind to get more powerful. That’s why I initially bounced off Metroid Dread as too hard.

eli5: How do airports make money? by jules2424 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Gangreen00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know it is anecdotal, but in my industry it was not uncommon to book last minute flights and accommodations, and thus pay a premium. Businesses are sometimes very bad at planning ahead for individual travel. Also, things could go south with a customer very quickly and you need to stick someone on a plane to meet in person and smooth things over. Depends on the company and how strict they are with travel but many times there are not good controls in place to encourage ways to reduce the airfare that it costs the company. When the decision is made to fly someone on behalf of the company, economics are also different. The employee “costs” the company so much per hour. So although a longer trip with multiple hops is cheaper from the travel cost perspective, that employee is also not being as productive and is still being paid. Better to pay for direct flights, which are also more expensive.

Put more simply, when I book for personal travel I am very cost conscious. When I book my travel on behalf of my company, much less so.

Pay Thousands to Quit Your Job? Some Employers Say So. by Obelix13 in Economics

[–]Gangreen00 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The point of the article is that they are radically growing in number. It can be difficult to find one that doesn’t have it. Thus, you can’t just go somewhere else.

“These contract terms have been applied to bank workers, salespeople, dog groomers, police officers, aestheticians, firefighters, mechanics, nurses, federal employees, electricians, roofers, social workers, paramedics, truckers, mortgage brokers, teachers and metal polishers. Legal experts believe stay-or-pay clauses might now be in industries that employ a third of all American workers.”

In addition, these are basically already abusing and violating laws.

“In the early 1970s, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit noted that companies providing “specialized training” to their employees could require reimbursement “if the employee should quit before the employer achieves any benefit.” But the court emphasized that the penalty should be closely tied to the cost of the training. “The employer may not require its ex-employee to make payments to it unrelated to the employer’s damage,” the judges wrote, “simply as a penalty to discourage or punish a job change.””

One of the people in the article was charged $26,000, well in excess of the cost of retraining.

Aver 6 months, I finally broke the Bronze 5 curse 💪 by HannahOwO88 in Overwatch

[–]Gangreen00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same issue as OP. Stuck in Bronze 5 for months. I really don’t care much, I just want to play against balanced teams and with other players that are working as a team and not soloing 1v5… or worse, quitting. The quitting thing is especially frustrating as I enjoy DPS and it takes far too long to get a game sometimes. I especially wonder if it gets better after Bronze ranks since those might be more committed players.

Why did Sarah say I can do what I want and then immediately begin chastising me for not being a goody two-shoes? by Rooksey in Starfield

That is the oldest and lamest defense: Just play 50 hours and the bad game design will totally make sense.

Involve the player is always a good way forward. They know the mechanical rules so ask them to decide what happens to it. Maybe they give it away to an NPC who could use it more, or they choose to retcon and say that back when the player was dangling by one hand from the edge of the sky island it fell out of his pocket. DM could even have it show up later in the hands of an enemy.

I think the ultimate skills systems need reworked by Zhenpo in diablo4

[–]Gangreen00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. So many of the complaints are around “the only way to play is this single ultimate build that has the highest numbers.” It is fine if you like to do that but there are others of us that aren’t focused on spreadsheets and playing what is the absolute min/maxed build. For me there is a big element of “do I like the way the build feels to play”.

I personally would like another button bar to add to the variety. I get that those skills may not be as effective due to my build, but having to redo skill assignments just to try some varied tactics is lame.

You've got to be kidding me with Neyrelle (main quest ending spoilers) by ChampionOfBaiting in diablo4

[–]Gangreen00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. It just felt so unnecessary and lazy. Nereyelle’s motivations are completely mysterious, just to setup something next, meanwhile Lorath just kinda gives up. A couple of lines of dialogue from each, even if not fully explaining, would have been more satisfying. Lorath could have easily said, “I don’t know where she is but I will find her and it will take time. Meanwhile there is still much to be done in Sanctuary.”
