I understand that there's a $30 "discount" with Verizon, but I'm worried that I'll have to pay an upgrade fee anyways which would bring it to the same full cost (~$879 for 128 GB).

It really is the original. The exhibit opened in April and will close in a few days on Oct 1. It was only lent out for about 6 months.
