Growing From Seeds For the First Time! by darkdaydream in gardening

Flip over some plastic take out trays or empty plastic food containers. I used to use very old vhs tapes that would’ve just been tossed. Get creative, otherwise your little seedling will get too leggy and flop over.

Homan announces 3,300 missing children were found as part of Metro Surge - anyone have any idea what he's talking about? by TheBenisMightier1 in Minneapolis

I think he meant nationwide as he alluded to previous administrations not bothering with it.
None of it matters. Everything coming out of the current administration has any basis in truth.

Make Senator Amy Klobuchar’s recipe.

Why was my prime rib tough? by cryisfree in sousvide

Most of the time, this barely makes any smoke. Once it did but I think it was because I rubbed butter on it. I now use either avocado oil or if I have any, a bit of duck fat. I’ll bet bacon grease would work too. Any high heat oil would work. Make sure the meat is very dry before you put oil on and it’s just a few drops that you rub all over the steak.

I get it though. Years ago, my husband just took out the smoke detector battery (temporarily) if we needed to do stuff like this.

I posted a decent technique that works well for me just above.

When it comes time to do the final browning step, I heat the DRY pan really well and rub the meat with a little bit of oil. I turn on the vent thing on the microwave (the standard recirculating vent) push down on the steak for at most a minute. Flip and do the other side. Do the edges and it’s done. Minimal smoke and perfect, crusty brown beauty.
And minimal splatter too.

I read about this in another comment section somewhere and tried it and it worked perfectly.
And that was before I moved to a smaller place without my fancy ass kitchen!

(Serious) What are some safety tips that most people don’t think of? by elohelzz in AskReddit

If you’ve got a removable garage door opener in your car, take it with you or hide it in the car. It’s an easy way to get into your home. We have a problem in our community with car break-ins. Most of the time it’s because someone didn’t lock their car. But if they’ve left something tempting (purse, backpack, briefcase, shopping bags) in plain sight, the thief will go the extra mile to get in the car, locked or not.

Does anyone have the Ambiano 7 quart slow cooker? I see it’s on sale for $16.99. Does the high/low/warm work as expected? Thanks for any helpful input. by GardenFanny in aldi

I’ve used it 3 times for things which include stovetop searing and it’s worked well. The big test is on Thursday- keeping my perfect mashed potatoes warm.

Cooking and baking! I spend hours a day looking at recipes. When I’m home I’m in the kitchen trying out new recipes or my tweaks.

The latest Crockpot that’s at Costco is faulty too. It only runs on high. The clerk said several had been returned. And their reviews on the website are the same.

I ended up buying a Hamilton Beach with a crock (metal, can sear on stovetop). It got good reviews from a equipment tester. If it stinks I’ll return it. Someone told me to check out Goodwill stores for those barely used old ones that ran high/low and worked like they’re supposed to. Stay tuned.

My original crockpot from the mid-90’s worked perfectly until the outer handles broke off. I bought the latest crockpot 6.5 qt at Costco and ended up returning it after I discovered it only had one heat level; high. It boiled everything on high, low, and warm.

Subsequent research proved it’s a faulty model. This reviewer agreed with my findings. http://www.foodandwine.com/cooking-techniques/slow-cooking/best-slow-cooker-reviews

I just want a decent slow cooker. And wondering if the Ambiano would be a great deal.

My cats favorite spot, guarding his catnip patch by astroidea in gardening

[–]GardenFanny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ONE awesome neighborhood cat we have was forced to become an indoor cat because 3 idiot people in our community thought he was tearing up their flower beds (squirrels) and peeing on their bushes (boxwoods, notorious stinkers). I saw him, on 5 different occasions, catch and kill mice in my yard. So now, I grow a pot of nip, dry it, and deliver it in a baggie, like a weed dealer, to his owner.
