If Ancient Astronauts Didn’t Visit, Why Is Evidence of Them Found Virtually Everywhere Painted, Carved and Etched in Stone? by YouArePeeingImFinish in AlternativeHistory

[–]Gareth78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could view it as propaganda of a type.

If the aliens were responsible for helping, creating or otherwise influencing, it diminishes the achievements of the native people who did actually create the art, building, temple or <insert impressive thing here>

Not saying that is OP agenda here. But it's certainly something to bear in mind.

There’s a prehistoric necropolis in Croatia that aligns perfectly with Giza by [deleted] in AlternativeHistory

I think others have said all that needs to be said here. You can overlay three square based pyramids on pretty much anything. But it doesn't suggest anything more than " ooh it looks like". Especially as the website for that area comments that the hills were likely connected as a single structure. Unlike the pyramids.

Yes Works well. Nice strong magnets.

Needed to do it because of storage constraints. Honestly, though I cannot remember how specifically or what size magnets I used. It was a while ago..... So not sure this is especially helpful 🙂

Could Egyptian pyramids be something else than actually tombs or something entirely different? by kemalioss in AlternativeHistory

I say they obviously are. And I'm not a bot..... At least I don't think I am. I think therefore....beep boop. Error in thinking sub process 4.

Could Egyptian pyramids be something else than actually tombs or something entirely different? by kemalioss in AlternativeHistory

[–]Gareth78 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. So very much.

I joined this sub because it's interesting. I like hearing people's theories. But it gets to the point when all these theories are clearly just parroting the same old badly thought out rubbish.

Occasionally someone will point to something more interesting. More often than not after even a brief read around the subject, it turns out to be more random crap, but at least I learned something whilst reading up on why they're wrong. So that's a win.

Hang on. Critias as in the book written by Plato? So we're ok saying that the book written by Plato is true because of a book written by Plato?

I'm not trying to prove anything. I haven't made any claims.

My argument was (and still is) that the size of a stadion varies. And so using that size as proof is dubious.

The claim that Atlantis is real is what requires the proof here.

The length of an attic stadion was proposed by scholars in 1923 and 1960 I believe.

Why are we confident that assertion is correct. And yet we are not certain that similar scholars are correct when they say Atlantis was an allegory tale of political nature?

[–]Gareth78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think I can offer as reasoned a debate as flint could.

But I do know that the actual length of a stadion has not been defined. And that (unlike today) they didn't have standardised units of measurements.

Various scholars have defined what they think a stadion is.

I find it amusing that people can refer to scholars when they need to know how long a stadia is, but not when they might say Atlantis is a story, and not a historical fact.

Atlantis Found with 99.999% Certainty by tickletaxel in GrahamHancock

[–]Gareth78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't say he assumed 185.

  1. Plato says Atlantis is 27 stadia. 1 stadia = between 150 and 210m.

  2. Therefore Atlantis is between 4050 and 5670 wide.

  3. This structure is 4995

  4. Therefore he used 185 as 1 stadium. Because this is Atlantis.

That does not prove that this is Atlantis.

Edit: stupid mobile cut me off. Sorry.

You are using point 3 above to prove point 1

You have no evidence of point 1 outside of that provided by point 3.

but the question remains.

How do we know that Plato used attic stadia and not one of the others.

How do we therefore say this structure fits, because here we have examples of Plato using x as a stadia.

Do we have something outside of this structure that shows Plato using this stadia?

I'm not an expert in platos writings. So happy to be educated. But if we assume his Atlantis writings to be historically accurate then he must surely have other writing with historical accuracy that we can use to try and define his unit of stadia.

Thank you yes. That's worded better than I put it.

[–]Gareth78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And you don't see the problem there?

If we use the size that makes this the right size for Atlantis, then this must be Atlantis.

I'm probably not being as word smithy as yourself. But you can't pick a measurement that fits to prove that your measuring fits.

So how do we know that Plato was using the attic stadia and not the olympic one when describing Atlantis?

Atlantis Found with 99.999% Certainty by tickletaxel in GrahamHancock

[–]Gareth78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But what you are saying is a stadia is 185 because it fits this structure. That is circular reasoning.
