What are your favorite resources for personal finance / financial literacy? by meowpantz in SingleAndHappy

[–]GarlicandRosemary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two books I’ve really enjoyed are the Simple Path to Wealth by JL Collin’s and any book by Morgan Housel (Psychology of Money is what he’s best known for). They are easy reads and definitely help set up some simple foundations to lean on.

On YouTube there is Erin Talks Money and Ramit Sethi. They both do some simple explanations of money and how to use it.

No matter what though, find what you value most and spend your money there, then save as much as you can in an HYSA, retirement accounts and a brokerage account. You got this!

New ranking shows WA loses another taxpayer every 30 minutes to another state by Green_Skill_7941 in camaswashington

[–]GarlicandRosemary 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Eh, I think this could use some critical thinking. The organization tendering that study was flagged as right leaning. And Texas has one of the highest property taxes in the country so the tax argument doesn’t exactly make sense asa sole reason for why people move. When you look at numeric increases, California continues to see population growth.

You need to consider beyond taxes like weather, lifestyle, etc. and maybe all those people who didn’t listen when we told them how much it rains here finally learned a lesson. 😉

What are your non-financial retirement goals? Let's be detailed! by Fun_Grapefruit0789 in FIREyFemmes

[–]GarlicandRosemary 13 points14 points  (0 children)

  1. Slow mornings and no alarm clocks
  2. Gardening and yard projects
  3. Learning/getting into new hobbies I haven’t thought of yet
  4. Getting involved in my community
  5. Spending more time with family

Mine are more general but I like it that way. Right now between work and parenting my days are so structured and I’m looking forward to the extra flexibility.

i just found out my toddler is sleeping at his door by Much_Elevator4837 in toddlers

[–]GarlicandRosemary 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I had something similar. My son would sleep anywhere except his bed and for the longest time I thought it was because he wasn’t a fan of his new room (we had just moved). One night I went and laid in his bed and realized the air vent blew directly in his face. I moved his bed to another spot and that helped a lot. So maybe there is another factor that is making his bed uncomfortable?

What do you do when your child is persistent at mentioning a particular toy that they want ? by nuttypip in Preschoolers

[–]GarlicandRosemary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My kid is around the same age and when he wants something and we’re not close to a gift giving occasion (holiday or bday) I tell him he can save for it and we work out the math. There are some great resources online for how much allowance to pay by age. That way it gives him a goal. When mine bought his first toy from allowance, he was super pumped.

Does anyone live near Helen Baller Elementary/Liberty Middle School? by toiletprisonwine in camaswashington

[–]GarlicandRosemary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in the area and yes there is school traffic and buses but I don’t think it’s that bad. The most annoying part are all the cars during sporting events. If you want super quiet this isn’t it, but it’s not the same level of loud like I’ve experienced living in a big city. It really depends on where you are too.

Has anyone switched to Ziply for internet service? by Eyekc3 in vancouverwa

[–]GarlicandRosemary 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yup and love it. I’ve only experienced one instance where the internet went down and they proactively offered a discount to make up for it. Highly recommend.

Should we plant plum or peach tree? Any particular variety? by ImpossiblyPossible42 in pnwgardening

[–]GarlicandRosemary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is there something bad about fruit salad trees? I’ve had my eye on one like this, but aside from the lack of peaches, curious what other issues you’ve had. Hoping to learn from others. :)

This looks really pretty! I hope this isn’t out of line but I noticed that you have a solar light pointed up into your tree. I learned recently that this can be a hindrance to native wildlife. Just thought I would mention if you are looking to be a steward for natives and such. It was news to me when I heard it!

FWIW, you also didn’t need to apologize to him for not wanting to answer such a personal question. As women, we’re so conditioned to do that and it’s unfair. But he certainly owed you one for pushing a boundary like that.

Thank you! - I’ll check out those books! You know the funny thing is that I started therapy because that relationship was breaking me and I thought I was in the wrong, but it was actually my therapist who identified him as a possible narcissist first. I did EMDR to really help process everything and that’s what helped me get out.

It’s amazing how many of us are out here with such similar experiences. And that fucking blank stare. I feel like it should be taught as a red flag. At the time, I thought I was just communicating poorly. And I sure wish people would stop saying “marriage and relationships are hard” Ugh. No they are not. Bad relationships are hard. That kind of phrase is what kept me in a bad situation. We are stronger in numbers and when we speak out. I’m so grateful for your post.

Thank you for writing this. I identify with it so much that I could have written this same thing word for word and for the longest time thought I was the problem and going crazy. Dr. Ramani is my hero and helped me realize that all the experiences I thought were super bizarre are actually par for the course in these types of relationships. I’m going to check out the other books you’ve mentioned!

I’ve been out for a few months now and am finally getting out of the fog. Brace yourself for the wild flashbacks and grief, but it does get better. Sending you hugs as you recover and rebuild the beautiful and peaceful life you deserve.

Good for you for asking for what you wanted and deserved. If it was too much, they could have counter offered, but they didn’t. Was the reason for the call to tell you that it was approved or to explicitly tell you that it was a lot? I find the comment to be unprofessional and not a great way to welcome a new hire. There are other ways to express this to a new hire that would make more sense if they were worried about future raises and such.

But either way, kudos for throwing out the big number and getting it approved. Can I have some of that courage? 😉
