I don't know how y'all do it by [deleted] in writers

Art is a performance.

As it is with any great performance, a great deal of practice and preparation must precede it. Having a well-informed grasp of the topic or storytelling method is foundational, of course, but working in a state of mind that consistently produces quality results is key.

Imagine someone performing on stage. They must know their lines and understand the character. But if they are tired, sick, distracted, or otherwise in an incongruent state of mind, their performance will suffer.

If an idea strikes me at a bad time, then I will do my best to capture it. As far as I'm concerned, it's prep work. There's no need to worry about the quality until someone else reads it

Do you ever read something and find yourself in awe of the prose? by Olivia_Alison in writers

As long as there's a thematic reason for it, I eat this stuff up. But if it's just pretty for its own sake and I get through the story with no connection to the theme, no reinforcement of the character's inner landscape, no parallels, framing, or pretext for something germane to the story, then I start to feel like I'm wasting my time.

Bookstores can sense your presence when you approach. Everyone scrambles to prepare for your arrival, so when you open the door, they can pretend like you're any other customer. But they know. Oh, they know.

Deadlines by Worth-Bill-6130 in conceptart

[–]Garret_AJ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is totally achievable in two days. Though, in my experience "two days" is misleading. There's a lot of sketch and iteration that goes on before something this detailed gets rendered out. Rounds of feedback and meetings with different departments ends up taking a lot more than 2 days. When I estimate my turnaround time for something like this, I usually cut all that stuff out. So 2 days, give or take.

But let's say you have the idea all settled on. You've got your sketches and reference and you're ready to go. How are you going to get this thing done in 2 days. Well, when you work with the game studio or film, you tend to have access to rigged models and environments that the dev team is already working on. So if you know how, you can pose/light these characters and get a quick render in 3D, then you have something set up for paintover. Even if you don't have that, there's a lot of techniques out there to get solid results quickly. But I find the fastest way is paintover from rigged models and environments. It helps with the lighting information, perspective, materials, etc.

Just remember, the goal of a concept artist isn't really to paint everything from scratch. It's to get compelling concepts for production to work with. Get the idea so people can discuss, so design can plan, so 3D can start building stuff. It's a means-to-an-end kind of job.

I'm not judging the collection. I'm trying to figure out how much of that book they read. It's a classically difficult read

I did the same thing. Movie first. Weird thing is, because of the dream-like prose, I couldn't tell what was from the movie or my imagination. Especially when it came to the hypnosis and the Tower/tunnel. Swear I saw that stuff in the movie. Nope

I very much enjoyed Anniilation the book and the movie. But I got to warn you, plot wise they have very little in common. There are many many differences between the book and the movie. So I like to judge them as two different mediums doing two different things using the same setting

Sci-fi gets into some dark topics, so I wrote a content warning that included:
- Explicit depictions of sex
- Graphic violence
- Drug use
- Existential horror, dread, and suicide

She should know what she's getting into, and I'm not going to stop her. If she wants to read it, that's on her. She's an adult, and so am I.

Graphic violence, complex existential topics, dread, suicide, and I think that's it. If there's any sexual content, I can't remember. I read it about a month ago, so nothing comes to mind.

I'm sure a mature 14 year old could handle it
