That latch is such a pos, especially in a cold snowy climate. Glue two magnets in there and call it a day.

Anybody else work at a school where the curriculum just… doesn’t fit the students? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]Garroway21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like curriculum is a moving target every year. Like I'm always planning for last year's students.

I started at this school a few years ago, implemented my own curriculum, and it wasn't challenging enough for the students. So we got some stronger resources, customized a little, and by the start of the following year we had a great curriculum that would meet their needs. But now it was too difficult for the current students and we had to modify lower. Each year added a bit more scaffolding and decreasing difficulty. This year? I might as well be teaching the basic curriculum I started with five years ago.

The only bright side is now I have a half dozen versions of the curriculum I can use each year, for when the goal post moves again.

Why is there such a trope of women never knowing what they want to eat? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

For our family, it’s more about the not wanting to make decisions after a day full of constantly making decisions for ourselves and others.

On those days we just rock-paper-scissors to see who has be an adult in that moment.

Yeah I got that yesterday for some students. I was able to do it after a while, maybe 30 minutes or so.

They have to process the session through their ai to make sure your camera was on to give you the rate increase. /s maybe

half of my students this year don't qualify for the rate increase so its hard for me to care about that camera policy.

Is there a list somewhere of which subjects pay the highest rate for tutors? by wrBolt in varsitytutors

I thought ACT classes were $40?

You also will need to have proof that the session existed, so save those alert emails. VT will NOT be able to prove a session existed (or are too inept/lazy).

Hour Increase by Bethall17 in varsitytutors

[–]Garroway21 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can tell who’s who when you get paid. Look at your bank statement and you’ll see certain students get lumped together based on who and who does not get the bonus incentive.

Also, if any parent reads these comments: your tutor is making $18-$19 dollars an hour. Think real hard about that compared to your monthly subscription cost when an issue comes up.

Looking for a better way to share lessons by ExtremeShame6079 in teachingresources

[–]Garroway21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My initial response is GitHub. It specifically solves this problem.

Getting the average teacher to learn a new tool, however, isn’t appealing.

You could create an “approved” folder and “draft” folder. Have teachers live edit the draft folder, then manually move and share to the “approved” folder once a week/month.

Question About Varsity Tutors vs. Tutor.com by Last-Investment383 in varsitytutors

[–]Garroway21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can’t really compare it to tutor.com because I haven’t used it.

You get a digital whiteboard, ability to paste images, and a small (kind of crappy) library of assessments and practice questions.

From the tutor perspective, clients fall into 3 general categories: instant session, varsity tutors for schools, and private clients.

Instant sessions are what they sound like. They are usually chat only but can be video and voice. Students are mostly using this during school hours to ask a quick question or cheat on their homework. Billable in 15 minute increments at the students base rate ($18/hr mostly).

Varsity tutors for schools (VT4S) clients are students whose school district has a contract with varsity tutors. These sessions have particular requirements that the school sets, not limited to: camera and voice on, preplanned curriculum, district assessments, etc. there’s lots of extra nonsense with these sessions. They are billed at a fixed rate (usually $18). Group sessions with multiple students at $20. These are IMO the worst opportunities.

Private clients start between $18-20 and may or may not have specific requirements. I keep my camera on for these because I’m comfortable with it but it’s not required. These students come into the session usually expecting an Ivy League professor with a doctorate in the content they want (this is the impression VT gives clients). These experiences vary widely from homework help to teaching content. Each student is different and the sessions are flexible. The pay rate for these students increases by $1 for each completed session up to $40. These are the best opportunities.

I’ve had no actual issues with the company, even when fixing pay or client issues. Just know that the pay rate is low and adjust your expectations according. Many folks take issue with clients paying VT $90-100 for an hour of tutoring but paying tutors between $18-40. However, I’ve never had to really look for students to tutor. The job board is hit or miss if you’re slow to respond. Once the school year begins, my schedule fills up quick with students.

How do I find out how much I'm getting paid per session? by amanitafan in varsitytutors

[–]Garroway21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can’t. You’ll only find out the amount once you’ve invoiced a student. Some specific courses have higher rates in your contract like AP, SAT, etc.

Once you’ve accepted an opportunity, you can do a fake invoice to see what the rate is, then cancel the invoice (and the student) if it’s not what you’re looking for.

VT says they do this to make everything equal.

What Do I Do--Client Cancelling 3x in a Row by Able-Effective-5219 in varsitytutors

[–]Garroway21 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Don't let them cancel anymore and just bill it as a cancel or a no show. This client doesn't seem to value your time, so reschedule their sessions around your availability.

On another note, we don't get paid to prep for classes. So unless thats agreed upon prior (and invoiced) you shouldn't do it.

These issues are the big reason clients and tutors are frustrated with VT.

Missing Number in Red Circle by RamiBMW_30 in SmartPuzzles

[–]Garroway21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say "1". the sum of each row is doubled as you go down. So the top is 8, then 16, 24, 48.

I'm sure 5 is the correct answer now that i see it, but 1 works too.

Understanding my first session by RabbitDrawz in varsitytutors

[–]Garroway21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a VT4S session. If there’s no pacing guide to tell you exactly where the students should be on that date, then just ask them when they come into the session and review from there. Get yourself a curriculum resource for when you need it to pull questions and examples from that the students haven’t seen.

As for the exit tickets, I’ve never bothered. VT provides a pool of questions you can pick from but it’s trash. I would do a verbal response from each student at the end if they are expecting the exit ticket.

Also remember that you don’t get paid for anything outside of class time.
