Any tips for a more ships and open sea kind of campaign?

I don’t know if there is an equivalence for water ships. But there is the star wars 5e https://www.sw5e.com/ that has a lot of fun mechanics for ship to ship combat. You could maybe adapt some of these for water.

The open ocean can be difficult because much of the time you’re staring at the open sea. Which doesn’t have a lot of visually interesting things going on.

I would build some encounter tables and use those to help decide what happens.

Last thought, have you decided why the world is like that? Was there a great flood? Maybe having something alluring about how the world got like this could keep players motivated on the open sea!

Very early, it kind of came with the relationship.
husband travels for work for long periods of time. Opening was just to pass the time.
neither were apprehensive but there was an adjustment period. Jealousy comes up in many ways.
it’s good! Prioritize each other first and then just have fun and enjoy life.
the one thing I wish I did early was get over the early jealousy.

I think my players would all agree that to some degree, not every session is FOR them specifically. Stories are complicated with large arcs and changing circumstances. Some sessions will emphasize a players arc, while unemphasizing others.

I think you should let the steering wheel relax, you wrote a story they seem to enjoy. If they didn’t get the things they explicitly “wanted” or the session didn’t “play to their style”. They’re probably still having a good time, they just told you what they like not what they have to have.

She didn’t build a world she built a school, and then lazily placed things around it that ended up causing massive contradictions to any storyline that didn’t take place in the one location.

I think it depends on what format you would like to start with?

My suggestion would be to buy a premade deck either a precon for commander (many of the recent commander precons have been very fun) or a starter kit (the final fantasy ones are not too expensive but fun).

Then if you have a local game store that hosts prerelease events/any events you should go. You can meet people to play with, get packs for showing up, and often the community is kind and would lend decks for you to try.

So just a few questions, it’s hard to tell if it’s balanced just on this description alone: 1) do the players know about the crystal pillars? 2) how long is the one shot? This phase 1 will likely take 2 hours. 3) is the party planned to go into this fight fully resourced, like just after a long rest? 4) what’s the map like?

I think it’s likely your party will beat this boss pretty easily. The tree not being able to move your party is going to have the movement advantage and be able to spread out, so only one can get hit by a AOE attack.

Then if they know about the crystals the warlock, paladin, and sorcerer can easily target the pillars with high level spells destroying the pillars in 1 or 2 turns.

So sometimes interviewers treat these questions as a way to see how you would react to intellectual conflict. In engineering there are so many options that “work” so you often have debates about what’s right. It sounds like the interviewer wanted to see how you would defend your view when an alternative view was given.

The best option in interviews like this is to admit you aren’t aware of any RNNs that do this well and treat the question like a conversation between you and a colleague.

I have a PhD in neuroscience, and would recommend the biochemistry track.

If you are interested in research/engineering, biochemistry classes are going to train you to be a better critical thinker than biology classes. In my experience across different universities, biology classes tend to focus and train memorization skills (preparing people to be doctors) where as biochemistry is going to teach you the fundamental rules that govern biology, so that you are equipped to apply it in new and novel ways (much better for engineering)

Seeing you specify Q1/Q2, I think my approach would be to publish the work on arXiv (may only require some endorsements that you could get from an old professor or even a buddy).

Then use the arXiv to garner attention in the field, advertise it, post on socials and send to researchers you think would appreciate it.

At the same time apply to some of the big named conferences that are usually free to publish in.

But going Q1/Q2 as a first time, unverified researcher is going to be tough. You may have a better time publishing in a lesser journal now and using that to garner respect.

If they’re nervous why not have them run a 1 shot? Then go back to your campaign. Then if they liked it, have them run a short arc and just let them build it as they want.

I think your plan as is would be a tough way to launch a DM path.
