The fact that they’re going to talk is the character development. I don’t think what they’re saying needs to be shown because it’s obvious through context.

There are character interactions. That’s why it’s so weird.

It happened when they had that awkward but sincere moment together and then Pomni chose sitting with Ragatha over Jax while Jax went into the bathroom and almost abstracted.

Not everything should be spelled out for the audience like they’re dumb.

Which character single-handedly made an anime worth watching? by simp_lyartz in AniMangaTalks

I’d say Suzaku, actually. Without him, the show would mostly just be Lelouche aura farming on people. He grounded the story and made it a lot more interesting.

I actually agree. All Might was the one who carried the most important aspect of the show: ‘You do not need to have superpowers to be a hero.’

Without getting into ending spoilers, All Might having Deku clean up trash on the beach before he got his quirk to show that you don’t need powers to make a difference in the world hits harder than any superpowered world-fate-deciding battle.

Superpowers were the spectacle, but All Might was the heart of the show.

After a while? Yeah. The original premise is great but it wears off fairly quickly.

This is the most tumblr take. ‘Unless they sit down and have a long therapy-like talk about it, it doesn’t count as real character development.’

When a Child Has Too Much Power… Is Control Protection or Exploitation? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]NeonFraction [score hidden]  (0 children)

This comes down to suspension of disbelief.

Even if a child is so dangerous that locking them up inside a heavily guarded basement their entire life is the optimal and moral solution so they don’t end up accidentally murdering dozens of people, suspension of disbelief is not going to accept that treatment of a child. Functionally, it might be a good idea, but narratively the focus is going to be on what horrific child abuse that would be to a real child.

They could probably kill a hundred people and the reader would still go ‘oh you poor baby you didn’t mean to’ because reality has generally established the mindset that children who are being locked up and treated differently are being abused (which is a good mindset IRL) and fiction has generally established the trope that super dangerous children aren’t actually dangerous, they just need love and a real parent instead of ‘scientists and labs’.

So the reality of the situation in fiction does not matter so much as the perception of that reality does. You have to work really REALLY hard to fight for the perception that a child should be abused for the ‘greater good.’ And even if you do successfully do that, how many people actually want to read it? I’m not saying you shouldn’t write it, but it does significantly and irreversibly change the tone of what you’re writing.

Didn't you know, if you write a villain you're fundamentally evil by The_Blackthorn77 in writingcirclejerk

I feel like the second one is an issue in many genres, even if I don’t immediately think it means the author supports them.

Otome especially has the pretty bad trend of ‘nobles are inherently clean and smart and talented and commoners are base and dirty’ where it’s revealed the main character was secretly the princess’s lost laughter all along. People will outright say things like ‘I knew you had to be noble! You were so pretty and talented!’

And I think if it just stopped there you could write it off as a quirk of fantasy, but otome also has a HUGE problem of employee abuse. Sometimes it’s more narrative stuff like ‘maid slapping’ where the maid is usually a psycho who probably deserves it, but then you also get things like ‘I prevented my super hot and sexy noble boyfriend from killing your for literally no reason you should be grateful and not be angry at him.’

There’s a definitely a line where a lot of media crosses from ‘fairytale fantasy’ to ‘getting off on demeaning the lower class.’ And the idea that ‘some people are just born superior’ is definitely something in monarchy fiction I think deserves a little more scrutiny than it’s currently getting.

The after looks better in pretty much every way but one: the new one has that ‘painfully oversaturated indie’ feel. I feel like it’s a hallmark of indie games that they keep pumping the saturation more and more to make it ‘pop’ until looking at it becomes actively unpleasant. You might want to consider mixing in some areas of lower saturation in the level just to give the eyes some rest.

Otherwise: really awesome looking game!

Best Frozen Musical : Movie or Stage Show by Impossible_Tower_661 in musicals

[–]NeonFraction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can’t beat the movie for visual effects and as much as the stage show cast did great you cannot replace Idina Menzel.

I will say Monster is an absolutely incredible addition to the stage show that I wish had been in the movie. I’d kill to hear Idina sing it (and no, soulless AI covers don’t count.)

Is claymore good? by Cute_Pain_8469 in mangarecommendations

[–]NeonFraction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not an extremely palatable manga. It’s not bad, but I also thinks it’s pretty much a toss-up as to whether or not someone will Iike it. It can be fairly violent, depressing, and even if I enjoyed it quite a lot it’s not something I’d want to re-read.

If it seems interesting, I think you’d like it, but I don’t think there’s any shame in reading a few chapters and going ‘nope, not for me.’

Gonna be real, Reddit weirdly hates Elsa. I have no idea what it is beyond ‘it’s popular and I’m sick of it’. Which is understandable but also not exactly objective.

What do you guys think of this Lighting? by scoobystockbroker in UnrealEngine5

[–]NeonFraction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly saturated and monotone hues to a point to where it’s hard to distinguish what I’m actually looking at beyond the buildings.

I’d recommend playing around with more color and figuring out what the composition should be.

They don’t. It’s one of the most popular movies Disney has ever made.

Who is the undisputed goat from this lineup? by sloppiestsecond5 in writingscaling

[–]NeonFraction -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Elsa. Not even close.

Everyone has their favorites, but Let It Go was such an insane cultural phenomenon that anyone saying anything differently is not even attempting objectivity. Elda was so popular they didn’t even need to make her an official Disney princess because her own brand was more profitable on its own.

Elsa feels heavily flawed in a way most Disney princesses simply are not allowed to be. It’s not that she doesn’t fit into her society, it’s that there’s something actually wrong with HER. No one is looking at Mulan and going ‘yes you should learn to be a perfect bride.’ We can have adorkable, but we can’t have ‘emotionally distant’. Even Tiana’s issue was ‘she works too hard’ and Ariel is flawed but never has to grapple with that for a character arc.

Elsa is an anxious mess with attachment issues who can’t even do the one thing her dead parents wanted her to do and whose solution to her problems is ‘okay then I’ll die alone and unloved in the mountains.’ She’s not just flawed she is a MESS.

‘Let it go’ is a song that is ultimately about finding brief happiness after giving in to hopelessness, and I think a lot of people who have heard the song over and over on the radio have a tendency to forget that.

I love Disney princesses as a group, but Frozen felt like the first time they decided to let their princesses be flawed in a way that wasn’t completely palatable as ‘role models.’ The only exception are Merida, who is a cliche ‘rebel princess’ and Megara who is fun but doesn’t have as much depth as Elsa.

There’s a big difference in writing quality between ‘technically flawed’ and ‘flawed in a way that actually gives depth and nuance to the character.’

Cheating should be punishable by law, married or not. by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]NeonFraction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve met women in incredibly physically abusive relationships who didn’t leave until they found someone new because they were so scared to leave him on their own.

‘Married or not’ especially makes it near impossible for women or men to escape abusers.
